Valiant: Knock Knock…The Sandman…The Gift…Part 22…

Time seemed to stand still, so many
Strange experiences building and
Colliding together…over the years,
And more and more recent months,
Weeks and now days. It was so much
To take in. Jon couldn’t even imagine
How far and wide such things could
Be happening, all that he knew that
What he was experiencing was

Matthias stood panting staring at
Him waiting to catch his breath, to
Catch some sense of reason…but
It wasn’t there. ‘Are you going to
Tell me what that was about? Why
Did it say that…Mama, Angel?’

Jon avoided his eyes as he tried to
Catch his own breath. His mind
Just kept spinning. ‘I don’t know.’

‘Yes, you do.’ Matthias insisted. Then
He stood a little stronger and began
To pace back and forth. ‘I never
Planned on finding anything in that
House…. I was just roaming about…
Looking for a…place. And then I
Find THAT…And then I stumble
Across you and that…mist.’

Jon looked at Matthias slowly and
Uneasily. ‘I didn’t go looking for it
Like you did. It just happened.’

Matthias just stopped and stared. ‘I
Don’t know what I’m looking for…
I just…’ Then he looked at Jon
Pleading for him to tell him something.
‘What is going on Jon?’

‘How should I know?’ Jon could
Only say. ‘Things like this just
Happen around me. I try not to
Think about it too much.’

‘How often do these things happen
With you?’ Matthias asked.

‘Often enough.’ Jon confessed.
‘Like I said, I try not to think about it.’

‘Don’t you want to know?’ Matthias
Asked. ‘Your drawings…that dream
You told me about…’

‘That is how I keep it…’ Jon told
Him. ‘I put it in the paper and
Then I put it away and don’t think
About it. There’s too much work
To do to have time to think.’

Matthias laughed. ‘Well I guess that
Is a better answer than living in a
Fantasy all the time.’

Jon laughed and nodded back. ‘A
Person would go crazy otherwise.’

‘Well, its playing with me head
Surely.’ Matthias responded. ‘So
Tell me…do you have an explanation
For Gretchen and that house?’

Jon thought carefully to find the
Words. ‘I think it’s hard for some
To let go…of the past. Even as a
Spirit…And when they’re forced
To see things as they really are, it
Frightens them…So they hang on
To what they know and won’t let
Go of it…and it haunts them. I told
You I don’t like ghosts.’

Matthias breathed a bit easier. ‘I
Like that answer.’ Then he thought
More of the mist. ‘And these other
Things…these lights, this behavior…
The things going on?’

‘How should I know?’ Jon said a
Little aggravated. ‘It’s a lot for me
Too. No one ever asks me what I
Think. I’m used to being told to be
Quiet. Most seem to think I have my
Head in the clouds.’

‘Yes, well…they say that to me too.’
Matthias laughed shaking his head.
‘There is something about you though.
I don’t know what it is, but something.’

Jon thought quietly of the many secrets
That he had. ‘Well…you probably just
Think there is more there…’

‘No.’ Matthias insisted kindly. ‘No,
There is something there. You’re a
Hard one to read. I will admit that.’
He laughed again and wiped the sweat
From his brow with his sleeve. ‘This
Angel that- ‘

‘Its hard to find someone to talk to.’
Jon said cutting him off. ‘But…I
Did find some people who helped
Me. These gypsies that I met…’

‘Gypsies?’ Matthias repeated with
Surprise. ‘You?! Now I am shocked.’

‘You don’t like gypsies?’ Jon asked.

‘No, I just wouldn’t think you would
Talk to them.’ Matthias replied.

‘I like people.’ Jon answered. ‘Well,
Good people that is. If they’re nice,
Why wouldn’t I?’

Matthias nodded. ‘I think I understand.
So, what about these gypsies?’

‘They come in the spring.’ Jon explained.
‘I go see them sometimes. It helps…. They
Helped me. Maybe they can help you
Find whatever it is you’re looking for.’

‘But…aren’t you curious about all
These things happening?’ Matthias

‘If anything is going to happen, its
Going to happen whether anyone
Understands it or not.’ Jon could only
Answer. ‘I would rather have peace
Now in how I feel than be curious…
I just hope it’s nothing bad, that’s all.
But if you’re looking for anything I
Can take you to see them if you want.
I have a feeling they will be in the
Meadow now.’

‘How do you know that?’ Matthias

‘Because when things like this
Happen…they’re usually there.’ Jon

That was enough for Matthias to
Hear…For now. They smiled at
Each other then agreed it was time
To go back to Jon’s home. If they
Hurried they should be there soon
Enough to eat before it was too dark.

They didn’t talk much on the walk
Back. Jon avoided explaining too
Much more. He had a lot of private
memories that he didn’t want to reveal
Too fast. Matthias was still a stranger
And to put everything that he had
Shared with the gypsies into a compact
Conversation would be impossible.
Things would just have to sort themselves
Out over time. If there was something
That needed to be discussed Jon had no
Doubt the opportunity would present

By nightfall they arrived back at
The farm as they hoped. Jon’s family
Looked beaten and worn by the day.
Everyone was feeling numb now from
The loss of his grandmother. There
Was very little talking, when Jon and
Matthias arrived they barely acknowledged
Them. The family had finished their
Dinner and went to bed while Jon and
Matthias took whatever leftovers were
Available to feed themselves, then they
Went to the barn to talk.

‘When do you think we can go see
These gypsies?’ Matthias asked him
As he settled himself in the loft and
Jon moved around some hay that
He planned to use.

‘We can try tomorrow.’ Jon told
Him. ‘I should be taking the goats
To the far meadow for grazing. Some
Of the larger does should be kidding
Soon. The grass is good there. The
Gypsies usually set up their wagons
Nearby…We can try then.’

Matthias seemed satisfied with that.
Then they talked briefly about Jon’s
Family, the farm, his chores…light
Conversation to finish the day. Then
Off to bed they went.

The next day proceeded unusually
Slow. The family was grieving and
Retreated into a grim silence as
They moved about. No one asked
Each other anything, even less than
They usually did…They only asked
What was done and what wasn’t,
Then reacted to it.

When the chores around the house
And barn were done, and once Jon’s
Grandfather had left to check on
Crops, Jon took Matthias with him
To graze the goats in the far meadow.

‘What is life like in your village?’
Matthias asked him on the way.

‘Much like any other village I would
Say.’ Jon told him. ‘People do their
Work, and mostly keep to themselves.
Why do you ask?’

‘I was just wondering how it has
Been since all of these…things
Have been happening?’ Matthias

‘Well,’ Jon answered with a slow
Breath, ‘How do you think they would
Be then? People get suspicious when
Strange things happen…Impatient,
Aggravated. They start looking at every
Little thing differently…chasing shadows
That aren’t there. They want something
They can see and touch to blame. Don’t

‘I guess.’ Matthias nodded.

‘Can I ask you something?’ Jon said
To him as they watched the goats trot

‘Yes, of course.’

‘You said that you are looking for your
Place?’ Jon went on. ‘Does that ever end,
For anyone I mean?’

‘I don’t know.’ Matthias answered as
He thought deeply about it. ‘I will know
When I find it. Why?’

‘My family always taught me to give
That up…To just work and not to think.’
Jon replied. ‘But for me, finding my place
Always meant finding some peace with

‘Hmm…’ Matthias said with a slight
Smile. ‘I can’t imagine peace in myself.
I have done some very wild things…It
Might scare you to hear them.’

‘Oh no, I would love to hear about
That.’ Jon laughed. ‘Those are
Interesting things to hear. I have had
Some wild friends.’

‘Really?’ Matthias laughed. ‘You
Surprise me again I must say.’

Jon was about to laugh and elaborate
When he noticed that they were nearing
The meadow he talked about. The goats
Were moving faster for the good grass….
Here they would find their own way
Without much shepherding; they were
Well trained by habit on where to go, and
There were few predators here to worry
About. But Jon’s senses caught something
Different. He stopped abruptly to let
The goats move on…Then Matthias
Stopped to watch him.

‘What is it?’ Matthias asked as he saw
Jon look around sharply, tilt his head
To listen.

‘Something is different. I’m not sure.’
Jon answered. Then some mysterious
Guiding instinct inside him compelled
Him to walk to the left…It felt as
Though there was a beat or rhythm in the
Air, but not in a way could be normally
Heard. He felt it. And he followed it.

Then slowly as he walked and Matthias
Followed, wagons came into view. But
It was no wagon train that Jon recognized.
This one was larger and more decorated.
And as they drew closer, they could hear
Voices, many voices. The sounds of
Children laughing and playing…Then
Of people talking…Then men and
Women laughing. Then the brush and
Trees parted…And Jon froze, his eyes
Bulged as Matthias looked on besides
Him. There were ten reddish colored
Wagons positioned in a great round
Circle ahead…

There must have been at least fifty
People or more there, all ages…dressed
Brightly and wildly. Jon hadn’t seen such
A sight in a long time, not since he had
Spent that time in the city ages ago. His
Jaw dropped at the sight of it. Who were
They? These were not the gypsies that he
Knew. Among them he saw people of
All manner of colors, and types. Big and
Tall, short and round…lean, solid…
From pale and blond, to olive tanned
Skin…and some looked almost yellowish,
And some with skin so fark they appeared
Almost pure black.

‘You seem surprised?’ Matthias said
Quickly studying his face.

‘These are not the gypsies I know.’
Jon said slowly to him. ‘No, these
Are different…’

‘Is that bad?’ Matthias dared to ask.

Jon thought carefully, trying to feel
As much as he could. He felt an intense
Tingling sensation…stronger than he
Ever felt before. He couldn’t speak.

All at once the people among the
Wagons began to quiet and then
Stand still as they noticed the two
Young men. Normally they wouldn’t
Even care at all…From one of the
Wagons a woman appeared. She was
Tall and slender, and beautiful, and
Moved with such a distinguished grace.
She seemed to command a silent
Attention from the people immediately.
She had olive-tanned skin and long
Dark hair, and wore this flowing scarlet
Dress with a purple scarf wrapped loosely
About her shoulders. She walked from her
Wagon with her arms crossed over her chest
Clutching the scarf tightly as she stared
Intensely into Jon and Matthias…

‘Who is that?’ Matthias said with awe
As he admired the beautiful woman in
Red watching them.

‘I don’t know.’ Jon answered quietly
As his eyes locked with hers. Her eyes
Were so piercing, fixating on him with
Some surreal wildness no words could
Capture…She wasn’t like the others,
There was some kind of magnetism in
Her presence. And in that realization, he
Slowly began to understand why the
People surrounded her.

The scene fell into an eerie silence, the
Crowd watching the two of them as
Several people began to gather around
The woman in red…who now stood in the
Very center of all the wagons and their
Circle. Even the small children went
Quiet, stopped and stood still to watch.
It became very uncomfortable, no one
Said anything at all…

‘Why are they acting this way?’ Matthias
Asked as he studied them in confusion. ‘I
Thought gypsies were supposed to be
Accustomed to guests? Should we leave?’

But Jon could only stand quietly and
Stare himself as his eyes remained locked
To hers. He quietly studied everything,
As much as he could…The variety of the
People. He had never seen so many different
Kinds together before…Yet, they all got
Along so well, people from around so many
Different lands…There was something
Magical about it.

Then finally, a stout gray-haired older
Man with a silvery beard and tanned
Skin dressed wildly, and covered with
Beaded jewelry stepped forward and
Pointed at them. ‘Look my friends,
Some locals here have come to see their
Futures told! Or rather…END.’ He threw
His head back laughing loudly, which
Encouraged several of the other men to
Join him. ‘Come closer young ones…
And walk with us outcasts…Are you
Afraid of Mystics, little men?’

‘Bano,’ another man said as he patted
Him on the shoulder. ‘Stop! Do NOT
Scare the locals now.’ This one was
The wildest looking one yet…He was
Bare-chested, dressed in strange color
Print pants…wearing all sorts of gold
Jewelry…and had all of these strange
Looking painted patterns all over his

The dark-haired woman in red then
Held out her hand, it was all she
Had to do to bring silence to everyone.
She just kept staring at Jon and
Matthias with the oddest expression…
As if she could see them but couldn’t.

Jon hesitated as he watched her
Do this. ‘She’s trying to read me,
And she can’t.’ He mumbled to

‘What did you say?’ Matthias whispered

Jon simply shook his head not wanting
To explain. He could tell now she had
Some kind of power…and yet, she
Could not read him. ‘These people…’
Jon whispered without thinking…

‘What?’ Matthias asked. ‘What? What’s
Going on? I don’t understand.’

A woman holding a baby gently swaying
The infant in her arms as it grew restless
Watched them closely. The baby kept
Struggling to see them as the mother
Kept trying to hold it still. The baby was
Keenly fixated on Jon with big eyes…
And then the child reached out and
Pointed at him with a tiny new voice
Said… ‘Mama, Angel!’

People froze and stared at the baby.
Eyes seemed to glaze over and squint.
Doubt and wonder filled peoples’
Faces. Then the mother of the infant
Finally turned to the woman in red.
‘Those were her FIRST WORDS!
She has never spoken before.’

The woman in red seemed to grow
Pale, she was stunned. Then she
Stared more intently at the two
New young men as this great
Big giant man with the darkest
Skin came up behind her
Protectively…He was built like
Some heroic statue, bald
And looked immovable. But
She simply held her hand up
To him gently and said, ‘Jona
It’s alright…No one here to
Harm anyone.’

‘That baby said Angel.’ Matthias
Whispered hard and fast to Jon.

Jon eyed him through the corner
Of his eye and cringed…How was
This all coming out so much with
Strangers? Jon’s insides shook,
Although his body did not move.

Then the sky seemed to roll with
Clouds…and the sounds of thunder
Echoed. Lightening flashed in them
And everyone began to look up
And watch this…The afternoon
Sky became a spectacle of
A light show with cracks and
Streaks of blue and red lightening.
The wind began to pitch…
Yet there was no sense of fear,
Only a chill of some excitement.

The woman in red looked into this
Above and seemed to understand
Something in it that no one else
Did. Then she looked at Jon and
Smiled, more relaxed…more
Certain. ‘When something right
Happens…you know it.’ She said
To him as she gestured for him
And Matthias to come into their
Camp. ‘I don’t know who…or
What you are…But I’m glad
You’re here. It’s nice to meet you.’

Valiant: Knock Knock…The Sandman…The Gift…Part 21…

A long silent night passed. The family lingered
For a measureless painful time in mourning
Around grandmother’s bed…No one could
Speak, it was impossible to know what to
Do so fast. But it was their responsibility
To cope with all the tasks of a loved one’s
Death in the times. Eventually Jon’s mother
Gathered the strength to dress, and then
Wrap her mother in blankets…Then they
Left the room and moved quietly to the
Dining table to sit and eat a modest early
Meal…There would be no sleep that night.
And in the morning, there would be much
To do.

At daybreak Jon assumed the role to
Do the farm work that had to be done
While the rest of the family dealt with
The matters of his grandmother’s
Passing. His father was still physically
Disabled, and his sister too weak to
Do much…which left his grandfather
And mother with most to be done.

Jon went to the barn and fed the animals
First. He patted and talked to them
Kindly, as always, they gave the best
Comfort. It never ceased to amaze him
How such simple creatures did so much
Help just by being there. He didn’t even
Notice Matthias come down behind him
As he fed the horses, his guest was gently
Curious to hear what happened.

‘Is everything alright?’ Matthias asked.

‘My grandmother died last night.’ Jon
Quietly answered. ‘Her heart…’

‘I’m sorry.’ Matthias said coming up
Behind him carefully. ‘That’s terrible.
Is there anything I can do? Can I
Help you?’

Jon looked at him with a smile. ‘Thank
You…If you like. But you don’t have
To. I can do the work.’

Matthias watched Jon move slowly
But steadily. ‘Don’t you want to
Take your time? Your grandmother…
Can’t these things wait? You should
Go sit…relax…’

‘No, if I sit still, I will think.’ Jon
Answered. ‘It’s better if I keep busy.’

Matthias was amazed as he watched
Jon move about his chores through the
Barn. ‘You really should slow down
Today…Aren’t you upset?’

Jon paused, this was a lot of conversation
For him over the last few days. He wasn’t
Used to it. Then he slowly thought of
What to say. ‘I’m numb.’

‘Numb?’ Matthias repeated. ‘Well,
That’s to be expected. It’s a terrible
Loss you just had…’

Jon froze and looked at Matthias
Afraid to explain. ‘It isn’t that. She
Was sick…we knew this was coming.
I knew…I was afraid of it.’

‘No one likes losing family.’ Matthias
Said kindly.

‘No, I was afraid of her haunting me.’
Jon replied.

‘What?’ Matthias was confused.

‘You don’t know my family.’ Jon said.
‘I guess every family is different. This
Must seem strange…I’m just…The last
Thing my grandmother said to me was
How disappointed she was with me. She
Always was…Everything I did was wrong.’

‘Ah.’ Matthias sighed. ‘Yes, I know that
Feeling. My father was like that.’

‘My grandmother had a hard life. It made
Her harder, harder than most.’ Jon explained.
‘Her father was murdered…He was beaten,
Tortured to death…slowly. He was a knight.
And she, and her mother and sister were
Also tortured…She saw sides of people no
One wants to see…from family and friends.
They set them up to save themselves. She
Taught hard lessons about trust…and she
Expected A LOT in her family…I was
Never good enough…no one was.’

‘That’s awful.’ Matthias had no idea what
Else to say.

‘I understand why she was the way she
Was. But she was still brutal.’ Jon went
On. ‘And still…I’m numb. She was like
Iron. Her hope was her faith…She will
Haunt me.’ Jon paused and went to the
Door of the barn to look out at the house.
‘When I was little…There was a ghost
That lived in that house…. An old man.
He’s gone now…I hate ghosts. I swear
She WILL haunt me. I know she will.’

Matthias thought carefully as a chill
Went up his spine. ‘The things happening…
Like we talked about? Do you think
Maybe there ARE reasons for this now?’

Jon fought to think. ‘I don’t know. Why?’

Matthias swallowed nervously. ‘Before
I came here…I stayed at this place…this
House.’ He paused. ‘There is something
That I have to tell you…Or maybe, I should
Show you.’

‘What is it?’ Jon asked.

Matthias went on to explain that he
Had travelled so much, he had become
A drifter. He had desperately wanted
To leave his small-town life in Italy
And see things, big things. One thing
Led to another and somehow, he ended
Up wandering from one place to another
Taking jobs doing this and that. And the
More that he saw the more things seemed
The same everywhere. People were
Locked into patterns of beliefs and doing
Things, most probably by how they were
Raised. Yet still he saw the same behavior
Everywhere. He was hopeful to find a
Place to settle eventually or find someone
Or something that could satisfy his

Eventually travelled farther North. He
Was barely older than Jon, still in his
Early twenties, but he had seen quite
A lot. He had become fascinated by
Stories he heard of lights in the sky and
How stories in the villages spread of
Strange sightings farther North…So
That is the path that he followed.
This led him to a village where the
People were kind and life appeared

He was going to camp one night by a
River when he came across a woman
Sitting by the water tossing bread crumbs
For the fish while she said prayers to
Herself. When he began to speak to her
Things grew odd.

She was older, in her late forties, and
Seemed nice enough. She explained that
She was widowed and lived alone with
Her son. The conversation seemed ordinary
Enough…at first. Matthias was very
Comforted talking to her as she offered
Him a warm meal at her home. He agreed
And then followed her to her small

Then Matthias explained as best as he
Could that this woman served him a
Generous meal. She appeared very
Eager for company. She told him a
Tragic tale of how her husband was
Killed one night by robbers…and how
Her only son had died the year before
Mysteriously in his sleep. She said he
Was having nightmares of awful things.
But then Matthias details became abrupt.
‘You just have to see.’ He said as he was
Unable to look Jon in the eyes. ‘I didn’t
Want to talk about it. Most people do not
Like discussing things like this…. But I
Think…after what we saw…’ He only
Shook his head. ‘You just have to see.’

Jon had to admit he was intrigued by
The story, though his gut told him
Otherwise. Such strange things going
On. And now his grandmother…He
Decided to take a chance to get his
Mind on something else. ‘How long will
This take?’ He asked.

‘Just a day.’ Matthias assured him. ‘Just
One day. It will be something to do.’

Jon agreed. Then later that afternoon
Before dinner he told his family that
He would be gone for one day, that
He needed time to himself. The mood
Of his house was so dark, the family
Had no fight to argue and reluctantly
Agreed. And the next day off Jon went
With Matthias on this little adventure…

Matthias took Jon down the river
The way he had come. The day was
Bright and almost cheerful despite
The mood in the air, which almost
Lifted Jon’s spirits. ‘I don’t know
Why I’m doing this.’ Jon told him
As they trekked along the waterway.

‘I just need to show you.’ Matthias

‘What is it that you want me to see?’
Jon asked curiously.

‘There’s no way to explain it to you.’
Matthias only laughed, a private
Confused thought riddling through
His head. ‘You just have to see it
For yourself.’

And then Jon laughed and shook his
Head. ‘This sounds so strange.’

‘I know it does.’ Matthias answered.

‘You make this sound so suspicious.’
Jon said to him. ‘Were you not satisfied
With what you saw yourself?’

‘I have no explanation for what I saw.’
Matthias answered.

Jon didn’t like the sound of that. ‘So
Why show me then? Why do I have
To see it?’

‘Because I think your reaction will
Be better than most others.; Matthias
Told him.

Jon winced at the words. Then his
Senses began to work harder. The
More he thought about things, the
Less this seemed like some simple
Trip. Still, Jon thought he knew the
Area well enough. He had never heard
Of anything like this before. But then,
There were always some reclusive
Families most never saw, not everyone
Crossed paths even over many years.
Many things could remain hidden in
Plain sight that way.

By the afternoon they crossed a small
Bridge over the river and quickly then
Matthias led Jon to a small cottage in
A dense part of the woods there. It was
An area so heavily thick with trees it
Would seem no one would ever build
A home there…Yet there it was, this
Tiny very neat looking little home nestled
Among the trees with a nice small flower
Garden out front…

Matthias stopped short at the sight of
The cottage and nodded once to Jon.
‘That is the place that I wanted you
To see.’

Jon quietly studied the little cottage.
From the outside it appeared so sweet.
But the windows were unusually dark
As their shutters were wide open to
Let the light in…as though the inside
Were a pit of blackness. It made his
Stomach turn to notice this. ‘I do not
Recognize this house at all. Who lives

‘Her name is Gretchen.’ Matthias
Explained. ‘And her son’s name…
Is Eduard.’

‘You said her son is dead?’ Jon
Asked as he looked at him with
A raised brow.

Matthias hesitated to answer. ‘He
Is…But she still talks to him…
And…he answers.’

‘WHAT?!’ Jon exclaimed.

Matthias stood looking at Jon with
A stern expression. ‘You heard what
I said.’

‘What do you mean she talks to
Him and he answers?’ Jon demanded.

‘Well…I haven’t heard him, not a
Voice…but he answers.’ Matthias

Jon shook his head in a daze. ‘Why
Would you want to show me THIS?
I told you…I DO NOT like ghosts!’

‘Jon, listen…’ Matthias said appealing
As sincerely as he could to him. ‘I just
Want you to see…To see this, because
With everything I’ve seen happen…Maybe
You can tell me if it means anything.’

Jon became instantly aggravated at
The idea. He said nothing and only
Started at Matthias coldly. Then he
Watched as Matthias went to the front
Door of the cottage and knocked. A
Woman answered, she of medium size
With a round face and grayish-brown
Hair. She appeared older than her years,
As if a lot of stress had aged her too
Fast. Matthias spoke briefly with her
And she smiled happy to see him again.
Then they both waved for Jon to come
Over. He held himself back a step, then
Reluctantly approached the house…
Sensing an ever-looming shadow spread
Everywhere with each step.

‘Jon, this is Gretchen.’ Matthias said
Introducing them. ‘Gretchen, this is
My friend Jon.’

‘Why, Hello Jon.’ Gretchen said very
Excitedly with a big smile on her face.
‘How nice to meet you. Your friend
Here was wonderful company for me.
I am so happy he came back to visit
With a friend.’

‘Hello, it’s nice to meet you.’ Jon
Said eyeing them both with a smile
And concealed confusion.

Matthias was very polite and dominated
The conversation. He described his
Trip North to Gretchen and vaguely
Detailed how he came to meet Jon;
Deliberately leaving out everything they
Had experienced together. ‘I just thought
It would be nice if Jon could meet you…’
He said slowly. ‘I just wanted him to come
See your home.’

Jon listened carefully as he looked about
The cottage…The closer he was to it now
The darker it appeared to be inside. He
Just kept wondering what was he going
To see exactly?

‘Oh, that sounds nice.’ Gretchen said
Without complaint. ‘I suppose Matthias
Wanted you to meet Eduard, my son?’
She nodded to herself quietly as she
Straightened out her dress and then
Neatly pressed back her hair. ‘Well,
Why don’t you both come inside…and
We can all sit down and have some
Warm milk…and cookies, and maybe
Some cake together? Something sweet…’
Then she stepped back and gestured
For both of them to come inside…

Matthias looked at Jon fast, gave him
A shy grin, then turned and went inside
Without waiting anymore. Gretchen
Continued smiling at Jon, the picture
Of the perfect kindest hostess looking
So innocent and generous. He could
Smell something cooking from inside
The house, something good…All that
He could do was smile back at her and
Go in…

The interior of the cottage was much
Like the outside. It was well kept and
Clean and very orderly. There were
Modest furnishings, and a lot of
Embroidered lines. This woman kept
Herself very busy. She led the young
Men in directing them to her dining
Table placed tightly by the little
Kitchen where they all sat down

The more Jon looked around the
More he noticed. Gretchen lived
Alone, yet it appeared as though
Someone else lived there…He saw
Men’s shoes set out by the fireplace,
Extra dishes on surfaces, pants laid
Out over a chair…ODD details that
Did not make sense for a single
Woman living alone.

And in her kitchen, he saw things
He had never seen before…There
Were various types of herbs and
Dried flowers and branches strung
Along the walls…with strange
Decorations, sticks tied into shapes…
Carved pebbles and stones in
Different shapes and colors set
About here and there…And an
A strange aroma mingled with
That of her baking filling the
Entire house.

Gretchen set out some small
Plates with cookies and offered
Them some them some milk.
Matthias and Jon smiled and accepted,
It all seemed so nice. However, Jon’s
Insides were twisting and turning in
All directions…something felt so

As Gretchen set the plates out, Jon
Noticed she put out one extra…
One extra empty plate set specifically
At a fourth spot before an empty
Chair. He was about to ask about
This when suddenly…the plate
Moved on its own closer to the
Chair in front of it. His eyes
Widened. Matthias saw it too and
Watched Jon’s reaction…then their
Eyes locked to each other’s.

‘Eduard,’ Gretchen said to the
Empty chair. ‘Where are your
Manners? Guests first.’

Jon looked at the widow with shock.
He could hardly contain himself,
He felt sicker with every moment.
‘Your son is here with us?’

Gretchen grinned at Jon as though
It was nothing. ‘Well of course.’

Jon eyed Matthias wildly. How could
He have wanted him to see THIS?
‘What is going on?’

Matthias was desperately watching
Jon hoping for hm to explain it
To him. This scared him too, he
Had never experienced such a thing.
‘I told you.’

‘Well you aren’t scared, are you?’
Gretchen asked Jon with a
Peculiar expression.

‘This isn’t right.’ Jon could only
Say nervously. ‘This isn’t right…’

‘What isn’t, my dear?’ Gretchen
Asked him.

Jon hesitated; his mind spun in
Wayward spirals…thoughts and
Senses fighting to make sense of it.

Then…as if the scene wasn’t
Socking enough, the more unexplainable
It became as a dulled young man’s
Voice broke the chilling silence…

All of their eyes shot to the empty
Chair…Jon leaned back in his
Seat, his blood racing, he was
Terrified now. Matthias then
Eyed Jon curiously…as did

‘ANGEL, Mama.’ The voice
Said again only louder. Then the
Plate in front of the empty chair
Began to shake, and then the
Table. ‘He knows…’

Jon leapt back from the table
Panting and sweating then bolted
Out the door. Matthias quickly
Followed after him without looking
Back. Both of them were scared
To death.

Once the two of them had raced
Across the bridge and cleared
The shore of the river and
Entered the woods, they stopped
To catch their breath and look
At each other. Matthias grabbed
Jon’s shoulder, his eyes big and wet.
‘I had to show you that. I’m
Sorry.’ He said panting.

‘Why?’ Jon panted hard.

‘It didn’t speak before.’ Matthias
Said. ‘It…only moved things
Around…What was that, was it

‘What do you think?’ Jon nearly

‘What was it talking about?’
Matthias asked desperately. ‘Mama,
Angel? What was that?’

Jon froze and eyed Matthias heavily.
He didn’t want to explain, he didn’t
Want to say anything…But he
Would have to now. All he could do,
For the moment was stand there and
Wince…Everything just kept getting
Stranger, and building.

SHIFT – research summary

Sharing / writing down my own interpretation helps me understand this topic, but it’s not intended to override other interpretations or understandings.

I’m not sure that any of us have to worry too much about what “will” happen… my thinking is that, much like earthquakes, or allergies, we’re open to accepting the energy in smaller bursts, which could build up an immunity to the bigger thing. That isn’t to say we wouldn’t feel something… We are in some ways already “there.”

Those who aren’t able to accept it at this time could get a larger whammy – but will ultimately benefit in the same way. I expect a few folks to take sick days or maybe even just pass out from exhaustion… but since we’re more immune we’ll be able to help set things right where needed. The rescuer needs to be well to help others!

We should all consider using those sick days if we have them, right now. We won’t get sick so much, but remember your 3-D “work” is something detracting from the process.

Those who are passing away for whatever reason (natural causes, violence, illness, etc.) are those who will not be going through the process… and that’s fine… this “event” is not something they need to experience at this time.

So the majority of folks alive during that time will be fine… but may start to lose interest in things they once found alluring, once it happens. Opportunities for coaching will be there, but some may also react negatively to assistance. It’s not a question of “if” they will… it is going to happen to most people. We’ve decided collectively, on a spirit level, to DO IT. “Gaia” energy means all of us… not just the planet. We are all connected.

Children will also be fine (especially those we mistakenly see as having “disabilities”). There is some “adultification” energy that the “regular kids” will need to deal with. But they’ll be fine too. Embracing your inner child and letting them do so too is very important.

This is my take on the material through my own research… your mileage may vary.

Valiant: Knock Knock…The Sandman…The Gift…Part 20…

Again, a long night came, brought on
By a mysterious dark mood in the air.
But this time it was a feeling shared
Far and wide by those forced to
Confront things that broke reason
And rhythm in their lives. The times
Were tough all over…to live, to get by.
And adding the unexplainable and
Unnatural to circumstances only
Increased the uneasiness in the air.
Where it was going and what it
Meant could only be a guess by most.
Only one thing was certain, the sun
Would rise and set and the world
Would keep turning.

Jon had a restless sleep. There were
No dreams that night, only an
Anxiousness that grew. At times it
Was as though some higher senses
Within him converged to give him a
Silent course of action…to keep
Going, and spontaneously react
When he had to.

In the morning Jon confessed to
His family over breakfast about
His new friend that he allowed to
Stay in the loft in the barn. They
Were a bit surprised to hear this,
Especially after recent events.
They, much like everyone in their
Village, did not take kindly to
Vagabonds or strangers. But a dim
Sense of hospitality gave them
Reason to see kindness was better
Right now, after how the neighbors
Appeared the day before. It could
Be dangerous for anyone alone in
The area right now. So, for the time
Being, they permitted it. Jon was
Grateful that his family agreed to it…
Though if truth be told he would
Have found way to help Matthias
Anyway. He left breakfast early and
Went to share what little food that
He could with his new friend.

He found Matthias in the loft still
Yawning himself awake nestled
Among the hay bundles. Jon was
A little shocked and laughed at
This, he had forgotten how other
People had different schedules. ‘I
Have some bread and eggs for
You if you like.’ He told him as he
Carefully tried to make enough
Noise to wake him.

‘Ah, thank you.’ Matthias smiled
Sitting up. ‘I almost wanted to
Forget.’ He scowled at the light
Of the sunrise that came in through
The cracks in the wood of the barn.
Then he sat up quietly struggling to

‘Thinking about yesterday?’ Jon

‘Yes.’ Matthias answered with a
Yawn as he studied Jon. ‘There is
Something about this place.’

‘Something?’ Jon repeated.

‘I don’t know. I’m sure I would
Say it wrong…But something.’
Matthias could only say.

Jon laughed. ‘That says a lot.’

‘The world is crazy.’ Matthias
Moaned his thoughts out loud.
‘It gets crazier all the time. In
Cities its different…Is there any
Place at all for someone like me
To find an answer?’

‘Someone like you?’ Jon asked
As he knelt down and put the
Bread and eggs beside Matthias.

‘Looking…Waiting?’ Matthias
Could only say. ‘I have no words to
Explain it. Only that I have to find
Something…my place in it all.
Some peace…maybe. If that at all

‘If you find peace, please let me
Know. I would like some.’ Jon

‘You seem content though.’
Matthias replied. ‘You said that
You like simple things. I assumed
You meant that you were happy.’

‘Everyone I think is searching for
Something inside.’ Jon answered.
‘I guess I always thought that meant
That I had to find that peace…inside

‘You don’t have that?’ Matthias asked.

Jon hesitated to explain. That
Would be a hefty story to tell,
If words could convey it. ‘Do
You remember that story that
I told you about…the library,
Those people, that place?’

‘Yes.’ Matthias answered curiously.

‘Tonight, I want to show you
Something.’ Jon said more seriously.
‘I can’t now…the day’s work needs
To be done. But tonight I will show
You. If that’s that alright?’

Matthias nodded with a blink. ‘I
Have no where else to go right now.
You have me curious. Alright.’

Jon smiled then left the loft and
Began his day’s chores. He rushed
About the day full of energy thinking
Of what he would share with Matthias
That night. He wouldn’t be too bold
And share everything, but he had to
Show him something. Since that had
Both shared that experience with the
Mist…he thought it might be time
To share his work with someone
And take a chance and see what

The day flew by. Once nightfall
Came and the evening was finished
Jon hurried to his room and gathered
All the drawings he could that he hid
Under his bed and bundled them
Under his arm and went carefully
To the barn. With a candle in his free
Hand, he shook thinking of the
Right words to say as he held
Onto the papers tightly. He just
Kept wondering how Matthias
Would react, he had never
Shared his artwork with a story
With anyone before…. What a
Mess it could be to understand.

Jon entered the barn and climbed
The ladder to the loft slowly. He
Listened to every sound in the air,
He hadn’t seen his new friend all
Day and wondered if he had in fact
Stayed or had left to pursue his
Adventures. A sudden cough from
Above gave him a quick answer.
There was no turning back now.
When he reached the top of the
Ladder to step into the loft he
Saw Matthias in the corner
Stretched out laying there silently
Lost in thoughts.

‘I was wondering when you would
Come.’ Matthias said sitting up.
‘What a day I had thinking about

‘I wasn’t sure if you would stay.’
Jon replied as he slowly maneuvered
Through the hay stacks to sit beside
Him. Then he set his candle down on
A bare spot of wood floor as he
Held his drawings tightly beneath
His arm. ‘I have something to show

Matthias waited eagerly, he watched
Jon hesitate then slowly pull the
Bundle of papers out and place them
On the floor in front of them. ‘What
Is that?’

‘My drawings.’ Jon said nervously.

‘You draw?’ Matthias asked with

‘Yes. When I have the time.’ He
Told him. ‘My grandparents and
Father hate it…But my mother and
Sister think it’s wonderful.’

‘Let me see.’ Matthias said as he
Scrambled forward to examine the
Artwork. His face lit up immediately
In the low light. ‘You are really
Good. REALLY GOOD. These are

Jon smiled fast. ‘Thank you.’ He
Paused before going on. ‘Once…
I went to the city with a friend…
And tried to be an artist…but it
Didn’t go well.’

Matthias seemed shocked. ‘Why?
These are great. These are as good
As any artists’ work that I’ve seen.
They’re beautiful.’

‘Thank you.’ Jon only smiled more.
‘I tried…but…Well, I guess I met
The wrong people.’ He paused again
Before going on. ‘I thought once…
If I could draw as a profession that I
Would draw the world beautiful and
Maybe inspire that beautiful to
Become real.’

‘That sounds great.’ Matthias said
As he enjoyed looking through
The drawings. ‘Why wouldn’t that
Work? People love beautiful things.’

‘Well,’ Jon answered, ‘See I always
Thought people wanted that too. And
I thought if I drew them as they wanted
To be, that would inspire them to be
What they wanted…But I guess they
Took it the wrong way. Too many
Thought I was falling in love with them
Because I drew them that way.’

‘Oh, I see.’ Matthias nodded with a
Laugh. ‘Yes, I understand that. Well,
There’s a lot of people looking for
Love, my friend.’

‘Yes. It was overwhelming.’ Jon
Replied. ‘I had no idea how many
People all wanted the same thing…’

Matthias studied the drawings of
The people Jon had done. ‘Are these
People from the city then, that you

‘No…’ Jon answered fast. ‘NO, I
Have never seen people in the city
Like THIS…Do you remember the
Dream that I told you about—the
People that I met? THESE are drawings
Of those people, of the people I met
In dreams like that. They were the ones
Who inspired me to draw this way.’

‘These women…these men…’ Matthias
Said with awe. ‘They are magnificent,
Gorgeous.’ His eyes lit up so bright
In the candle light that they lit
The room with excitement. ‘I would
Love to see people like this.’ He held
Up one drawing of a blond woman
In a pale dress. ‘This one, SHE is
Amazing. They all are. I could fall
In love with her. Are you in love
With her?’

‘What?’ Jon laughed. ‘Why would
You think that?’

‘The way you draw her.’ Matthias

‘No,’ Jon answered awkwardly. ‘NO,
In the dreams I had…when she visits…
She comes to tell me things. She is
Like my mother, a guide or something.
She gives advice, tells me what to
Do…She seems to know things about
Me, she worries about me, cares about
Me. I have seen her since I was very

‘You don’t love her?’ Matthias asked.

Jon thought quickly with a gentle smile.
‘Hmm…. I never thought about it very
Much. I suppose I do. But I have seen
Her since I was very little…its hard
To see her in a way that’s…inappropriate.’

‘But the way that you draw her…’
Matthias went on.

‘I draw them all the same.’ Jon only

‘OH…’ Matthias finally understood
Then nodded. ‘Oh, I see.’ Then he
Continued to examine the drawings
With fascination, the people especially
Held his interest. ‘These people, they
Are just so amazing…And so many
Of them.’

‘I have never shown them to anyone
Before like this.’ Jon explained. ‘Some
Have seen them…. Well, in the past those
That saw them either stole them…or
Just destroyed them.’

‘WHAT? Why would they do that?’
Matthias asked.

‘I don’t know.’ Jon answered shaking
His head. ‘That’s why I don’t show
Anyone. For some reason…they bring
Out an intense reaction in some people.’

‘Your art is beautiful.’ Matthias said
Then. ‘No one should do that. You
Should stay away from people like
That.’ He paused then. ‘But I have
To ask…. Is there a special reason
That you wanted to show me these

‘The mist, what we saw…’ Jon
Answered. ‘In these dreams, these
Visits…These people show me things.
They tell me things some times. Some
Things I remember, some things I
Can’t. I have no idea why. I only know
That somehow its connected to strange

‘How?’ Matthias asked. ‘Did they
Ever explain?’

‘No, not really.’ Jon replied. ‘They
Give me brief odd answers…I
Believe they tell me more, but I
Can’t remember it all. I just know
Things…react to things. I don’t
Know why I do, it just happens.
My grandmother says it runs in
The family…but we are not
Supposed to talk about it. No one
Ever gives me answers. I believe
Because no one knows exactly.’

‘Most people guess at answers.’
Matthias laughed. ‘They say that
They know, but they don’t. Trust
Me, I have encountered that A LOT.’
He sighed looking at the drawings
Again. ‘Another mystery…Interesting.’

‘Confusing.’ Jon laughed. ‘You see
That is why I like things simple. There
Is too much to think about. I find it
Best to just simply accept it…let it out
In my drawings, then I can put them
Away and move on…Then I can get
Through the day and work without
Getting lost in thinking about it too

‘I would think nonstop about it.’
Matthias laughed.

‘Well, that’s hard to do when you’re
Herding goats or chasing geese.’
Jon laughed in return. ‘So, I keep
It simple…and I figure one day
When its supposed to, if it will,
It will all work itself out in some way.’

‘I can see why you are careful to
Share that.’ Matthias laughed shaking
His head. ‘The way people are…Every
Opinion out there would tear it apart
Every which way other than what it

‘It felt right to share this now.’ Jon
Told him. ‘After what we saw…
And with what’s happening now…
If there is a connection…Somehow
It’s there.’

‘Yes, but what connection could
There be?’ Matthias wondered.

Jon thought carefully of the words
To say. But somehow only one
Word came to mind. ‘Hope.’

‘Hope?’ Matthias asked. Then he
Made a serious face thinking to
Himself of his own experiences and
Of what he was seeing now. ‘The
World is crazy place…The more
You see, the bigger and crazier it
Gets. I swear it’s the same everywhere.
Only slightly different depending
On where you go. It’s a desperate
Search to find your place in it all…
And what it brings.’

‘If there is something building,’
Jon responded cautiously, ‘Maybe
These people know things…Maybe
They are from a time or place that
Has those answers, found those
Answers…and can help. I don’t
Know. So far, that’s all that I can
Come up with.’

‘So why don’t they just do it then,’
Matthias went on. ‘IF they can do
This…if that’s what they are. Why
Can’t they simply make it easier
Or fit it then?’

Jon simply shook his head. ‘Maybe
There are rules. Maybe they can only
Do so much. Maybe through a dream
Is the only safe way. And besides,
Life still must go on…You still
Have to do things.’

‘True.’ Matthias sighed. ‘If life were
Too easy then all anyone would do
Is sit around and talk and eat…it
Would be a lot of nonsense, I think.
Arguing…indulgence, chaos even.’

Jon nodded. ‘Yes, it would.’

‘But still that leaves us with now.
We are living now…. right here.
These strange things happening
Must mean something.’ Matthias
Wondered aloud.

‘There must be some reason for
It. I don’t know.’ Jon answered.
‘A place in time…’

‘You are talking about great influences
Then.’ Matthias said fast. ‘That there
Is more to life than we are told. I
Can believe that. Higher Forces
At work…as if the world is some
Big game board.’

‘It seems to be.’ Jon agreed.

‘Still that makes me nervous of
My place in it all.’ Matthias groaned.
‘I don’t like not having a choice in
Something like that.’

‘I don’t either.’ Jon agreed. ‘I didn’t
Ask for this…I would be happy with
It simple, or not knowing as much.
I don’t know why it happens, it just
Does. Who knows what the reasons

‘You have some interesting things
Here…for some village farm boy.’
Matthias laughed kindly.

Jon smiled. ‘So, do you…for some
Wild traveler of the road. Maybe
There is a reason there.’

‘I want to believe in what you said.’
Matthias went on. ‘That in some way
There is…hope. But I just don’t know.’

Jon paused and sat up straight as his
Ears caught a disturbing sound coming
From the house. There were voices,
Crashing sounds and then shouting. He
Jumped to his feet. ‘Something is
Wrong in the house…’ He listened
More carefully, but what he heard only
Upset him more. ‘Could you please
Watch my drawings? I have to go see
What is going on.’

‘Yes, I will. I hope everything is
Alright.’ Matthias nodded as he watched
Jon race down the ladder and disappear.

Jon raced to the house to find
Everyone awake and hysterical.
His grandfather was yelling, ‘Dear
God, Please Help Us!’

His mother was racing about
Trying to assemble water, blankets,
Anything her wits could manage
To think of. Jon watched his
Sister huddle in tears beside his
Grandmother’s room…Then he just
Knew…his grandmother was dying.
Quickly and briefly his grandfather
Told Jon she had a heart
Attack, a bad one. Then he grabbed
His arm tightly for support.
‘I don’t know what to do!’

All reason seemed to depart, Jon
Somehow shut all sounds out
And focused on his grandparents
Room…then he went to his
Grandmother’s bedside in a daze
And knelt beside her as everyone
Kept crying and moving about
In hysterics. He saw her face so
Pale and still, her eyes big and
Glazed like pearls with chilling
Grayish and purple veins.
She was in tremendous pain…
In her sleep, something had
Frightened her so badly that
Her heart could not take it.

Finally, the family all gathered
Around his grandmother’s bed…
Crying silently. All they could do
Was watch and wait. Jon was
Paralyzed as he knelt beside her
Bed…he had dreaded the moment,
They all knew it was coming.

Suddenly, his grandmother gasped
As she stared wildly at the ceiling.
Then she grabbed Jon’s arm with
An iron grip and stared intensely
Into him. She shook violently
From a fear… ‘You were right…
I’m sorry…They’re watching you.
They watched my mother and
Her mother…and now they’re
Watching you.’

‘Who is she talking about?’ His
Grandfather asked.

Jon studied her carefully…he knew
What she meant…The others, not
The visitors he knew.

‘They are fighting for it.’ His grandmother
Said wildly. ‘So many worlds. They
Won’t split…They want it all…The sky
Is full of shapes…orbs, dark
Triangles…They’re all dark…
One battle will lead to another
To another and another…’

‘She is talking nonsense.’ His
Grandfather cried.

His grandmother held Jon’s arm
Tighter. ‘Be careful. They’re trying
To help you…The dark ones are
Trying to keep them out. But they
Can’t catch them or see them…
The Traveler is from the future…
It keeps repeating…all of it…
They come, they go…they stop it.
They try again. They keep trying.
You can’t stop what has to happen.
The moon…In April, then in June…
The last starts in August…
He was born on New Year’s…
The hope is won on a rose.’
Then she went silent in peace.

Knock Knock…The Sandman…The Gift…Part 19…

The rhythm of the hum filled the air like
A heartbeat, there was no turning back
Or stopping it. The sensation grew stronger
With each step as Jon slowly followed
Matthias into the woods. His new friend
Was far too eager to see what strange
Things were going on…But Jon had seen
More than enough strange things in his
Life, he didn’t even want to think of such
Things anymore.
‘Do you see anything?’ Matthias cried out
As he entered the forest and denser mist

‘Just you.’ Jon simply answered as he
Weakly followed him.

Then Matthias paused and leaned over
and let out a cough. ‘This feels odd,
smells wrong.’ He said waving his hands
at the thick air.

‘Perhaps we should go back.’ Jon replied.

‘Aren’t you curious?’ Matthias asked.

Jon hesitated. ‘No, not really. I really
Should take the goats home.’

‘Oh, come now. What could there be?’
Matthias said waving at him, tapping
Him on the shoulder playfully.

‘I’ve seen enough strange things.’
Jon only said.

‘Well, I haven’t seen anything like this
Before.’ Matthias told him. ‘And I’ve
Been lots of places.’

Then before Jon could say another word
Matthias pressed on and walked seemingly
Carefree into the mist. He pushed aside
Some brush and managed to find a narrow
Game trail that was tall with weeds. The
Thick fog-like air made it more difficult
To see as they moved onward, but Matthias
Was determined. Jon reluctantly followed
With an intense expression of uncertainty
Spreading across his face.

‘Do you hear how the hum is stronger?’
Matthias asked.

‘Yes.’ Jon answered. ‘We should go

Matthias paused and turned to sigh
At Jon. ‘Don’t you want to see?’

‘Why?’ Jon asked.

‘There’s nothing wrong with being
Curious.’ Matthias told him. ‘Listen,
I’ve been to many places…and there’s
Barely been anything that surprises
Me anymore. I’m just curious.’

‘Curious isn’t always a good thing.’
Jon half-laughed.

Matthias grunted a laugh in return as
He pressed on. ‘You little villagers and
Your ways. You need to see more of
What’s out there.’

Jon cocked his brow. ‘We discussed
That, remember? You need to be
Careful thinking like that.’

‘Oh Please,’ Matthias laughed as he
Moved along pushing branches aside,
‘What is there to see?’

Jon thought quietly to himself…he knew
There was something more there, the
Senses just knew things were off…that’s
What attracted people’s curiosity, and repelled
His in the same. ‘I don’t want to know.’

Matthias continued to watch the woods,
Turning every which way and then back
To Jon. ‘Well, maybe I haven’t seen
Enough. I just want to know.’

‘People are usually cautious for a reason.’
Jon said seriously. ‘It doesn’t matter who
They are or where they are from…being
Cautious is not a bad thing.’

‘I didn’t say that.’ Matthias laughed. ‘I
Just want to look…That’s all.’

‘I understand.’ Jon laughed in return.
‘Something just feels…off.’

‘Well, that’s true.’ Matthias said still
Coughing at the thick mist filling his
Lungs; though strangely it was not
Affecting Jon the same way. ‘Maybe
I’m just more curious, maybe that’s
What I need.’

‘I’m just saying things happen when
They do…in their own reason. Not
Because you want them to.’ Jon told
Him. ‘You can’t always go looking
For…whatever it is…sometimes it
Finds you.’

‘I appreciate you being careful,’
Matthias answered calmly. ‘But like
I said…I want to see what it is.’ He
Laughed to himself once again shaking
His head. ‘Have you seen so many
Strange things in your life?’

Jon winced at the question/ ‘I have seen
My share of things.’

‘Really?’ Matthias smiled confidently.
‘I’ve been to cities…I have met some
AMAZING people.’

‘Me too.’ Jon replied.

‘I met this great inventor,’ Matthias
Went on proudly, ‘Who said that one
Day they will make machines that can
Move without horses…and even fly.’

Jon nodded to himself, laughing inside.
‘That does sound amazing.’

‘See,’ Matthias said leaning towards
Him with a big grin and slapping him
Hard on the shoulder. ‘I told you I have
Met some amazing people.’ Then he
Turned and resumed his focus on what
He was doing. ‘You can’t expect things
To come find you, Jon…You have to
Go out and look for them.’

Jon winced quietly at his friend’s words.
He couldn’t even think of what to say
To respond.

The air grew thicker, so much so that
They had to walk more closely together
So as not to lose eyesight of one another.
Jon noted everything that he could even
More now. His ears told him the most,
The birds had stopped chirping and making
Noises above. It was the middle of the day,
The forests were typically full of all sorts
Of birds. ‘The birds are quiet.’ He said

Matthias paused and turned to him.

‘The birds, they’re not singing or making
Any sounds.’ Jon told him.

‘Is that important?’ Matthias asked.

Jon’s eyes widened. ‘I think so, yes.’

‘You farm people.’ Matthias said with
An abrupt huff. ‘You think you know
Everything. You know I’ve seen a lot too.
You should trust my instincts…People
Are the same where ever you go, friend.
They need to get out there, see places.
Have an adventure. You should live a

Jon laughed. ‘Why do you keep saying
That? What is wrong with liking things
Simple, is that so hard to believe?’

‘No, there’s nothing wrong with it.’
Matthias replied. ‘If that’s what you
Really like. So maybe I can’t sit still.’

And again, the mist grew thicker,
Drifting through the trees as though
It were deliberately being blown down
Upon them. Both of them paused to
Notice how much thicker it became.
‘Don’t you think this is just too strange?’
Matthias said once again gesturing
All around them at the air.

Jon couldn’t deny it. He simply eyed
The mist and then Matthias but said

‘I’m telling you people are the same
Where ever you go. People see things
Wrong a lot.’ Matthias said pointing
His finger in Jon’s face kindly. ‘You
Have to move, see things…Don’t worry
What people think. Have an adventure,
Get out there and see the world…’

Jon thought quietly to himself. True
Enough, there was a lot to see, far too
Many details to express to share…Yet
Somehow all of this coming from a
Stranger made it seem slightly comical
For the moment at hand. He decided it
Best to just simply silently nod and
Follow along.

‘I’m really good at reading people.’
Matthias said proudly.

‘I don’t know,’ Jon told him gently,
‘I think everyone has some story to tell.
In some way…’

Matthias was about to comment when a
Piercing shriek let out nearby. They both
Froze at the sound. It was no animal, that
Was very clear. But it was hard to tell
Much more than that. ‘What do you
Think that was?’ Matthias dared to
Ask in a whisper.

Branches began to snap in the woods
Nearby. Whatever it was, was very close.
Both boys instinctively froze and hunched
Down quickly. Then more branches snapped,
Then the boys fell down to their knees to
The ground. They eyed each other wildly.
Jon gave Matthias this expression as if to
Say, ‘You were the curious one who wanted
To see what it was!’

Moments passed this way, the boys waiting
For some sound or inclination of something
More…then minutes. In the silence they
Just continued to watch each other and wait
For more. Then finally there were more
Sounds of breaking branches…only closer
This time. The mist was thick and wet all
Around them. Then hazy lights flashed in
The thickness ahead and above them…first
Blinking slowly, then retreating to a low
Steady blurry orange-red light in the trees
And brush.

Matthias became even more curious now,
So, he began slowly crawling towards the
Noise and lights in the denser brush ahead.
Jon followed him just to keep him close
And in view. Then they moved into the
Greenery to get a better look…

Matthias lifted what leafy branches he
Could aside and peered into a more open
Thicket where the mist was less heavy.
Jon hovered beside him watching carefully
As what appeared to be a tall dark robed
Figure stood in the opening…It must have
Been at least 7 feet tall. Then it began
To move in the oddest way, gliding across
The ground, almost hovering without moving
Its legs…with its arm outstretched holding a
Staff…sweeping it across the ground through
The mist back and forth, left then right.

Matthias turned to Jon with a strained
Expression as his face went pale. There
Were no words to find on how to react
To this. They had no idea what they were
Looking at, at all.

Then Jon froze, some inner guide taking
Over his senses…His eyes wandered up and
Above the figure as far as he could see.
There were flashing lights of red and
Green above it. And his ears caught the
Hum more clear. The mist was falling in
Pillars from the lights above. The source
Appeared to be this great big dark triangle
Floating above the tree tops. Jon just
Stared at it as his jaw dropped open.

‘What is it doing?’ Matthias whispered
To Jon as he could not stop watching the
Figure on the ground.

Jon could say nothing as he kept his
Eyes on the dark triangle floating above.
His insides just kept telling him over and
Over, this is wrong, wrong, wrong. There
Were only feelings to describe it…nausea,
Fear, worry…panic.

‘I’ve never seen anything like this.’
Matthias moaned.

‘Nor I.’ Jon said with worry.

Just then a branch cracked. And the
Ominous dark robed figure paused and
Turned directly towards them…eerily
Leaning over with its hood-face seeming
To look at them. The boys immediately
Pulled back and crawled from the bushes,
Scrambled to their feet and retraced their
Steps back the way they came.

‘Is it following us?’ Matthias panted as
They maneuvered their way back through
The woods. ‘I can’t tell.’

Jon’s mind worked feverishly beyond
Control, the shock forcing his senses to
Work harder. ‘No, it’s not coming after

And strangely as they followed their
Way back out of the woods the mist began
To lift…fading as quietly as it came. By
The time they reached the meadow and
The goats…it was nearly gone. And once
Again, the birds…were chirping and singing
And moving about the woods as if all
Were normal. The birds just knew.

They staggered somewhat in a daze to the
Tree where they had shared bread not long
Before and sat themselves down with
An uneasy sense of relief. Matthias looked
Back at the way they came taking deep
Breaths, then his breathing slowed down
And he finally paused to wonder on things.
‘What just happened? That did happen?’

‘Yes, it did happen.’ Jon nodded.

‘If I were not alone, I would think that
I was losing my mind.’ Matthias groaned
As he looked at Jon almost embarrassed.

His words actually brought some relief
To Jon… “had he not been alone.” For once
Jon had an unlikely witness to something
That had happened…that had never happened
Before. He had to smile at that, even if it
Was just for his own peace of mind. But
The darkness to this experience was
Undeniable…It might have been an isolated
Incident for Matthias, but it wasn’t for Jon.
Something was building.

Moments passed of silence. Then Matthias
Turned to Jon nervously. He was ashamed
To admit how he felt after what they saw,
Especially since this was his first day in
The area. Then he reluctantly if not humbly
Confessed, ‘I have no place to stay tonight.
I was going to sleep in the meadow by
The river…But—’

Jon nodded, he understood. ‘You don’t have
To say anything…My family will not
Understand. I’m not sure if they will take
Kindly to strangers…But you can at least
Stay in our barn tonight. If you like.’

Matthias bowed his head politely.
‘Yes, I would like that. Thank you.’

‘Please do not say anything about what
We saw in the woods.’ Jon instructed.
‘My family, especially my grandmother,
Is very religious. I do not think they will
Hear it well.’

‘I understand.’ Matthias nodded once.
He remained quiet mostly from then on
As he stayed with Jon. He helped him tend
The goats and then bring them back
To his house and get them settled in their
Pen securely. Both he and Jon only
Made small talk, they did not discuss
What they saw in the woods at all.

While they were locking up Jon’s family’s
Goats in their pen and in the barn. Jon
Heard a growing commotion of voices
Near the house. Then he looked out from
The barn carefully to see that some of
The neighbors had arrived at their front
Door and had begun frantically talking
To his grandfather. He couldn’t hear
Them much, so he guided Matthias
Out of view and instructed him to go
To their hay loft above and remain out
Of sight there while Jon slowly walked
To the house to see what was going on.

The Bruders and Mr. Halverson were
Standing at their front door talking in
Heated excitement with Jon’s grandfather.
They were waving their arms wildly
Gesturing at the sky saying all sorts of
Things that made no sense, all the while
Jon’s grandfather just stood there stunned
By everything he heard. They quieted down
As Jon drew closer, then they each gave him
A brief nod to acknowledge him and then
A farewell nod to his grandfather…and then
They left.

Jon waited until they had all gone then
Stood closely beside his grandfather
And studied his face. He was pale and
Lost in some state that Jon had never
Seen before. ‘What was that about?’

His grandfather swallowed without
Looking at him, he only looked up
Towards the sky with some expression
Of doubt and fear mixed together.
‘Some of the neighbors saw some
Strange things.’ He scowled. ‘It’s
Nothing. Never mind.’

‘What did they see?’ Jon asked slowly.

‘Its nothing to think about.’ His grandfather
Said to him sharply. ‘Did you have any
Problems today?’

‘Problems?’ Jon repeated. ‘No.’

‘Good.’ His grandfather said not wanting
To explain. ‘I want you to lock the animals
Up tight tonight. Then get inside and have
Your dinner and get to bed. I want
Everything shut tight tonight.’

‘What’s wrong?’ Jon asked.

‘Just do as I tell you.’ His grandfather
Said. ‘No questions.’ Then he went inside
And shut the door without another word.

Jon stood a moment gathering himself.
Others must have seen things in the
Village as well…But what? He didn’t
Want to push things at the moment…So
He went to the barn and told Matthias
What happened, told him to remain out
Of sight, then went inside and had dinner
With his family as his grandfather instructed.

The meal was modest, a simple pork
Roast and bread…with chilling conversation.
It was then he learned from his grandfather
What the neighbors said as he told the
Family while they ate.

The neighbors along the river had seen
Strange shapes in the sky with red flashing
Lights. It had scared the livestock first,
The animals went wild, some even became
Violent and charged their owners. And
Word had spread from other parts of
Similar things elsewhere, days before. Here
And there, a hovering triangle…a glowing
Flying orb. People were behaving strangely,
Excessively angry, rude or difficult. And
There was talk of strange illnesses and
People passing out at different times of
The day for seemingly no reason. More
And more people were talking about
Mood swings, of dizziness and disorientation.
It was happening so often now that it
Was impossible not to notice, or to work,
Or to even think clearly sometimes.
No one knew what to make of
This at all…it had never happened
On such a scale. It wasn’t
Everywhere exactly, but just
Enough so that a significant
Amount noticed and related very
Similar symptoms and experiences.

Dinner ended abruptly with no
Conclusions, only wayward looks
And nervousness and repetitive
Prayers. They prayed for it to
Pass…whatever it was.

After dusk, and everyone was
Asleep – distinctly noted by the
Sounds of his grandfather’s snoring.
Jon snuck out with some bread
And went to the barn to check
On Matthias. He found him in
The loft nestled safely between
Towering bundles of hay. He was
Relieved to see Jon.

‘Are you alright?’ Jon asked.

‘For what it is,’ Matthias
Laughed, ‘I am fine. You?
Did you find out anything

Jon told him what he heard, not
Adding any speculations. It was
Best not to taunt details as
Opinions might abstract it more.
But it was clear, so far, none had
Seen what they had.

‘So, what was it?’ Matthias
Could only say about the thing
They saw.

‘I don’t know.’ Jon said quietly,
Afraid to think. ‘But I didn’t like
It…That much I know.’

‘My first day here.’ Matthias laughed.
‘That says a lot, oh…the things
I’ve seen…now THIS.’ He
Looked down solemnly before
Grinning at Jon. ‘Maybe you
Were right about being curious.’

Jon felt obligated to console him,
But couldn’t help but be forced to
Deal with it himself. ‘You can’t
Always control that… It happens.
For whatever reason…Maybe
We only see what we can handle.’
He winced at his own words, how
He managed that stability almost
Scared him. ‘I wouldn’t share
Everything though…I think it
Would scare them.’

‘I won’t argue that.’ Matthias had
To laugh. ‘So…what then?’

‘I don’t know.’ Jon said. ‘Wait
Hope. Hope it passes. Pray…What
Else is there?’

‘You sure seem calm after that.’
Matthias wondered aloud as he
Studied Jon in the dim light of
The candle he held. ‘Maybe I
Read you too fast…That story you
Told me about that place, the
Library…those fantastic things…
I thought you dreamed it. Now
I’m wondering if you did.’

‘Does it matter?’ Jon asked.

‘There is…something in the air
Unlike ever before.’ Matthias said
Slowly. ‘You can feel it. It’s not
Just here, it’s everywhere…But it
Seems stronger around here…That is
Why I came here…I was drawn
Here…I wanted to know…For
Some reason…’

‘What do you want to find?’ Jon

‘I don’t know.’ Matthias
Could only say. ‘How about you?’

‘I don’t know…Time seems to
Answer that on its own.’ Jon told
Him. ‘Everyone, I think, is looking
For something. But then are those
Answers different?’

‘No one thing is going to satisfy
Everyone. That’s why I keep searching.’
Matthias said with another grin.
‘When I find it, I will know. Oh,
If only there was a way to find
The right help.’

‘If only there was a way to help
Without anyone knowing it.’ Jon laughed.

Valiant: Knock Knock…The Sandman…The Gift…Part 18…

All through the night the wind blew
And howled with brief sprinkles
Of snow beneath a starry sky. It
Almost seemed like star dust, some
Fragile mysterious and magical gift
For the season. Then it all lifted
To a calmer dawn full of color
For a silent Christmas morning.

It had been such a hard year, a
Quiet morning in itself felt like a
Gift. But it had been too tough
To spare much for a festive holiday,
So most only minorly indulged that
Year. They had only simple meals
And were grateful for little things
And instead poured their hopes into
The times ahead and prayed for a
Better year to come.

Fortunately, Jon’s mind was too
Overwhelmed with private events to
Even consider Christmas. His family
Was quieter since most were so ill….
And there were still the chores to be
Done on the farm; yes, even on the
Holidays there was work to do. The
Best way they celebrated was to treat
That day as a day of prayer, and do
Nothing special really at all.

The Christmas season came and went
Then…and a new year began.

1560 Nuremberg, Germany

January rolled in with snow and lots
Of it…. Again fortunately, these were
Typical days with normal work and
Nothing unusual. There were chores
And solemn brief rationed meals and
Long quiet nights…which were great
For dreams and hope. Jon had lots of
Dreams, beyond control, and more
Than he could ever count. From the
Less interesting ones of doing chores
And boring things, like eating…to
Wild dreams of places that made no
Sense…of shiny cities and far off places,
And lands that he never knew or saw.
And some times with people he met that
Seemed familiar but weren’t…dressed
So strangely that it almost seemed like
They were from another time.

His mind went on such adventures in
His sleep, if he only knew how to write
He could have written books and books…
Full of stories no one would believe. But
In his family stories weren’t worth much,
Except maybe on a patient holiday over
Dinner…and then, it had better be a GOOD
Story to tell. to tell.

He tried to remember his favorite ones,
But many just got lost over time. Thinking
About them did entertain him while he
Did chores however. He just figured that’s
What most people did. But whenever he asked
Others about their dreams, most only said
That they couldn’t remember theirs much.

‘You have to focus on what you’re doing.’
His father always said. ‘Stop daydreaming.’

Then Jon would nod. He understood slowly
Over time. People must have confused
Daydreaming with the dreams at night, which
Were vastly different to him. The ones at night
He had no control over, those also said the
Most. But then it’s a matter of experience.

And on the days went. January rolled into
February the same way, snow. Then February
Into March…more snow, and then with times
Of snow and rain AND mud. The winter
Just could not decide if it wanted to see
The ground or not.

Then Finally the mud won, the snow
Melted and fresh new green sprouted
From everywhere. And spring finally
Came…with lots of work to do. By the
Time the meadows around the farm
Were thick and lush with new grass, the
Ground was ready for planting. Jon and
His grandfather set what seed crops
They had into the soil, then with
Whatever time he had left he spent
Grazing their goats and livestock, and
Resting as he watched them. Very slowly
He built his strength back up this way
Until he was as strong as he was before,
If not a little bit better. His own health
Issues had literally reshaped him so much
This way that he literally transformed
Into a different person…

One spring day in late April
Jon was taking the goats to a familiar
Meadow by the river…It was a place
Remembered well but never talked
About. He brought the goats into the
Open grass between the trees when
He paused as he heard someone
Whistling by the water. He left their
Herd to graze then carefully and quietly
Followed the sound…

There, by the river’s edge standing with
His pants rolled up his legs so that his
Bare feet nearly touched the water
Stood a young man about his age…
Whistling cheerfully holding out a
Pole that he was preparing for fishing.
He had olive skin and dark hair,
Good-looking features and had this
Carefree sense of delight about him.
Jon didn’t recognize him at all as
One of the local villagers so he had to
Be someone new to the area.

Jon watched him carefully and was
So curious to know how the stranger
Came to pick this spot. He laughed
To himself a quiet secret about the
Water then approached him kindly…
And stood a generous difference away
Just to let him know that he was there.

‘What’s the matter,’ The young
Man said to him slightly sarcastically.
‘Haven’t you ever seen anyone fish

Jon held his eyes low then smiled.
‘You won’t catch many fish here at
This part of the river. They gather
More downstream…where the water
Starts to settle.’

The young man bit his lip. Then he
Eyed Jon a bit embarrassed and
Released a big grin. ‘Ah well,’ he
Said lowering his rod, ‘It looked
Nice here.’

‘You don’t fish much?’ Jon asked
Humbly as he noted the stranger’s

‘I fish.’ The young man half laughed.
‘I fish plenty. I was just hungry. Did
You come to tell me that?’

‘No, I was just trying to help.’
Jon told him.

‘You could just say, Hello, then.’ The
Young man said.

‘Hello.’ Jon laughed.

‘Hello.’ The young man smiled. ‘I’m
Matthias. Nice to meet you.’

‘I’m Jon.’ He greeted back. ‘My
Family lives over there,’ he nodded,
‘Past the meadow through the woods.
Are you new here or just passing through?’

‘Just passing through.’ Matthias told
Him. ‘I’m moving around right now…
Trying to see places, find some place

‘Oh.’ Jon only said.

Matthias stood there trying to decide
What to do next, he was so hungry. ‘So
Jon, you want to help me fish?’

Jon smiled. ‘Well, I can’t…I have to
Watch our goats.’

They stood for a moment in awkward
Silence. ‘Well, are you just going to stand
There staring?’ Matthias laughed. ‘I was
Thinking of peeing next. You want to
Watch me pee in the river? I could go right

Then Jon let out a laugh. This guy was a
Real character. He hadn’t seen that in a
Long time. ‘I’m sorry, I’m not used to
Talking much. Listen, if you’re hungry…
I have some bred for lunch…you can have
It. I don’t mind.’

‘You would give me your lunch?’
Matthias asked curiously.

‘You said you were hungry.’ Jon said.
‘You can have some…Then maybe I
Can help you find a place to catch a

Matthias smiled. ‘Just like that?’

‘Yes. Why?’ Jon asked.

‘Sorry, I’m just used to…conditions
With offers.’ Matthias confessed. ‘From
Where I am from…nothing is free.
Everybody always wants something.’

Jon nodded, he quickly understood.
‘From where I am from people
Usually take without asking.’

Then Matthias nodded, then somehow
He quickly understood as well. Some
Are sincere, others are just always
Suspicious. It all depends on the experiences.
‘You don’t have to give me your lunch.
I wouldn’t take it.’

‘You said you were hungry.’ Jon said.
‘I know that look.’

‘Thank you.’ Matthias replied. ‘I honestly
Would like that. I wouldn’t normally do
Something like this, but- ‘

‘You don’t have to say anything.’ Jon
Told him. He turned slowly and waved for
Him to follow him, and led Matthias to
His favorite spot beneath a fir tree where
He left a little bundle of bread rolled up
In a scarf where he could sit and watch
The goats. He unwrapped it then broke
The bread in half and gave it to him.
Then quietly they sat and ate together.

‘So,’ Matthias finally said, ‘You gave
Me your bread…We’re sitting here
Watching your goats…Are you one of
Those small village farm boys curious to
Hear wild stories of the big cities from some
Travelling vagabond of the world?’

‘Wild stories?’ Jon laughed curiously.

‘Yes, you know. You farm boys
Don’t get out and see much of the
World…’ Matthias said kindly but
Proudly, very sure he had seen so much.
‘No offense.’

Jon ate his bread slowly with big eyes.
‘I’ve been some places, seen some
Things…. I have my own stories.’

‘Oh really?’ Matthias was very amused
By this. ‘Well, I am from Venice. Have
You ever heard of there?’

‘Italy?’ Jon asked.

‘You know about Italy?’ Matthias
Seemed surprised. ‘You know I read
People pretty well, Jon…’

‘Alright.’ Jon only said.

‘I bet…’ Matthias went on as he
Leaned on his bent knee and scratched
His chin, ‘That your family is one of
Those sweet little village farm families…
Where everyone smiles all the time, and
Kisses each other good night…You
Eat quiet happy meals together and make
Small talk about the BIG world out there…
I bet you have some family here…and there…
And they took you to the city a few times,
And you saw some things…it was all
SO BIG…And you just decided it was all
So BIG and wild and crazy that you would
Rather stay hiding in some little village
And be a farmer like your dad…. To make
Your family proud. How’s that?’

‘Why would you say that?’ Jon laughed
Looking down as he chewed on his bread

‘Because you have that look.’ Matthias
Told him.

‘No.’ Jon laughed shaking his head with
His head down. ‘No…its not like that.
I am tough one to read. Not a single person
Has ever read me right. People really
Assume a lot.’

‘Oh?’ Matthias was curious now. ‘Well,
Would it surprise you or scare you to hear
That I was a Wildman in the city? I’ve
Done a little of this, a little of that…I’m
A tough one to read too.’

‘No, not at all.’ Jon simply replied. ‘That
Wouldn’t surprise me at all.’

‘Why?’ Matthias asked.

‘Because I’ve known some like that.’
Jon answered kindly. ‘I’ve known some
Like that…a variety of people.’

‘You have?’ Matthias said with surprise.

‘It’s tough to read some people no
Matter how hard you try.’ Jon responded.
‘Does that matter? I know when someone
Is fun or interesting to talk to.’

Matthias grinned, he had to admit to
Himself that he liked hearing that. ‘I
Have to say, Jon…I like you.’

‘Thank you.’ Jon said with another laugh.
‘You know…I’ve found that…the ones that
Talk so much don’t always have the most
Interesting things to say. They talk to talk,
Or talk to find company…And that’s okay…
But it’s the quieter ones that usually have
The most amazing stories inside.’

Matthias thought for a moment then nodded.
‘I like that…To be honest, there are things
That I have seen, and done…no one would
Believe…or want to hear. Not that I could
Tell anyone…. or want to. Ah, it doesn’t
Matter. You should NEVER spill it all
Out there for everyone ever. That would be
Crazy. You always have to hold something
Back just for you.’

‘Oh, I agree with you.’ Jon nodded. ‘I
Could never share every story. It would
Be too much to believe.’

‘Alright, I’m curious.’ Matthias had to say.
‘Could you…share one with me?’

Jon laughed again with his head down.
He took a deep breath, then told Matthias
About a dream he had of a place like
Paradise…. About these strange lights
That he saw in the sky sometimes….
And about these handsome strangers
That took him places and told him things.
He tried to describe things are best he
Could without saying it all.

Matthias just sat quietly listening
With eyes that grew bigger and bigger.
He said nothing however until Jon was
Finished, then they just there eyeing
Each other silently.

‘So, what do you think about that story?’
Jon asked a little nervously.

‘I can believe that.’ Matthias replied
Calmly. ‘Yes, I can believe that. Are
You surprised?’

‘A little.’ Jon answered wide-eyed.
‘I’ve never told anyone about that. I
Was expecting…a laugh. I don’t know.’

‘No, I have seen some strange things.
STRANGE THINGS.’ Matthias replied
Slowly, almost carefully. ‘Tell me…what
Were they like, these people? I’m curious.’

‘They looked amazing.’ Jon said with awe.
‘In this one place I saw mostly men…They
Were tall, really strongly built…AMAZING
Looking. I felt like a dwarf.’

‘Really?’ Matthias was surprised to hear
That. ‘You look tall to me. That tall?’

‘Yes, taller than me. Even the women
That I saw were tall, and AMAZING.’ Jon
Told him eagerly, excited to share this
Story with someone. ‘But I saw men
Mostly…All dressed the same, in either
Blue or white. I think this one place that
They showed me…was a library. It was
Like they were…trying to show me

‘Show you what?’ Matthias asked

‘I don’t know. A book I think.’ Jon
Answered awkwardly. ‘Not that I can
Read…I think, they talked about…
Something called…The Geometry
Of the Senses.’ He nodded to himself
Then. ‘Yes, I think that is what I heard
Them say. I don’t know.’ He said
Shaking his head. ‘I can’t remember.
It was just all so amazing to see.’

‘It sounds that way.’ Matthias only
Said, then paused a moment before
Going on. ‘I’ve heard stories…about
People…seeing lights in the sky. At
Night mostly. And seeing…other

‘Other things?’ Jon asked. ‘What things?
Things like I told you about?’

‘NO.’ Matthias responded shaking his
Head with a hard laugh. ‘NO, not like
That…Usually, what I heard that they
Saw…frightens them.’

‘Frightens them?’ Jon asked really
Curious now…But just then, as if
The timing were matched eerily somehow
To their words…he suddenly noticed a flock
Of birds emerge over the trees from
The left…

Both of them looked up to
Notice the sight and rushing sound
The birds made as they took flight.
‘What’s with the birds?’

Jon studied them quickly, catching
As many details as he could. The
Way they moved, the sensation
That filled the air as they flew.
‘They’re in panic…something
Frightened them…’

Then they rose to their feet to
Watch the birds fly and race away,
Then they turned in different
Directions to watch and listen for
A reason…People, animals maybe?
No…There was nothing like that
To bring alarm at first. Then Jon
Caught it first, the noise…there
Was this hum-like sound filling
The area. And then they began
To notice a mist rolling in gently
Through the trees across the
Meadow. It began to attract the
Goats attention then…and the
Animals froze.

‘What’s that?’ Matthias asked.
‘In the trees over there…on
A sunny day? Fog?’

Jon grew nervous, his inside began
To feel cold. He didn’t like it. ‘I’m
Not sure.’

‘Want to go have a look?’ Matthias
Asked eagerly.

Jon just eyed him trying to fight
His growing uneasiness. He was
Dreading something strange happening.
‘Have a look?’ He questioned.

‘Yeah, come on. Live a little.’ Matthias

Jon wanted to laugh at the words.
He had enough to fill his curiosity.

‘Come on, it’s probably nothing.’
Matthias only laughed.

A strained moment of reflection
And the sense of something to
Come just seemed to block out
Reason. ‘Yeah, probably nothing…’

Matthias just seemed to hop at
A little adventure, then he waved
To Jon to follow and led the way
As he trotted across the meadow
Towards the spreading mist. Jon
Reluctantly followed, his eyes
Watching everything else…the
Trees…the sky, the goats…

Something was building with each
Step. The mist kept pouring out
Into the meadow, the sound of the
Hum only grew…And thunderheads
Began to tumble in above them
Across the sky. And somewhere in the
Forest ahead, then…lights began to flash.

Valiant: Knock Knock…The Sandman…The Gift…Part 17…

‘Legends will come to life, an age-old
Brotherhood will rise and be reborn to
Guide the world into a new era…Where
A balance will be found unlike ever before.’

-The Traveler

Jon lay in his bed watching the lady
Unsure if he was asleep or awake.
It really struck him this time more
Than ever before, it was so hard to
Separate what he was seeing from
Night and day…everything was
So clear. ‘So, that is your name…

‘You may call me that, yes.’ She

‘I always wondered.’ He said with
Awe. ‘You never told me…It somehow
Made me think it was all…just a

She held her manner very carefully,
Even shyly. ‘No, Jon. This isn’t a
Dream. I assure you, one day you
Will understand.’ Then she paused
Thinking fast. ‘But what concerns
Me more…is you. I’m sorry that you
Are going through such a hard time
Right now…I knew, I mean…I’m
Sorry but it’s hard for me to find the
Right words. There are things that
I want to tell you…’

‘But you can’t.’ Jon said finishing
Her words for her. ‘But…you DO
KNOW. You KNOW, don’t you?
That’s why you come. Because
You know something…you know

Kyrie watched him closely, her
Eyes meeting his like an old
Friend. She held her tongue regardless
Of what she wanted to say about it.

‘Why?’ He could only ask. ‘Why
Come then? To watch? I don’t
Understand? If you know…and
Don’t do anything…then why bother?’

‘Because we can’t.’ She only said.

‘That makes no sense to me.’ Jon
Told her. ‘Do you know how that
Makes me feel? I have wondered
This for a long time. I can’t tell
Anyone…Do you know what that
Would sound like if I did—how it
Would sound?’

She held her breath and sighed.
‘I realize that.’

‘No, I don’t think you do.’ He said.
‘From where I am, it makes me feel
Like…a pet. Like a pet being watched.’

‘It’s not like that, Jon.’ Kyrie insisted.

‘Then what am I supposed to think?’
He defended, even pushed for the
First time. ‘Do you know what just
Happened…what, or Who…just
Came to see me? What is happening?
I didn’t ask for this!’

‘Jon, please listen.’ Kyrie tried to
Tell him. ‘I can’t explain why these
Things happen to you, I only know
That they do. I can’t give you all
Those answers because I don’t know
Them all…not exactly. I am not t
Trying to add to your problems, I
Promise. We came to help you.’

‘We?’ Jon asked more curiously,
His mind racing. ‘Him…the
Stranger, the visitor…He always
Makes me forget his face. I can
Remember his words, the meaning.
Until I see him again…. Then, I
Remember. But over time, I am
Remembering more and more.’

Now she watched him more
Seriously. ‘You do? How much
Are you remembering?’

Jon caught himself before reacting
To her question. ‘You only let me
Remember a little…Is that right?’

Kyrie held herself strongly as she
Sat up straighter on his bed, but
Still exuded all the warmth and
Kindness that she always did. ‘I’m
Trying to help, Jon.’

‘Help me?’ Jon asked, almost
Spitting the words. ‘For what?’

There was a strained silence
Between them for a moment…Then,
The familiar visitor that was listening
Just outside of his door slowly
Walked in with his new (or seemingly
New) companion. ‘Jon, I think that
It’s time that our talks took a different
Turn…I think it’s time for you
To see something that…we…
Would like to show you.’ He
Nodded to Kyrie, who appeared
Surprised by him entering the room,
And then to this new companion…
Who was yet another beautiful
Woman with long wavy golden
Hair and the most amazing sparkling
Bluish eyes.

Jon was now in absolute awe. These
People were all so fantastic looking,
All of them…they just looked perfect.
There was no other way to describe
Them. He had never seen people like
This…And their clothes were all so
Finely tailored. Even their behavior
And tone was so regal. Jon felt so
Small in their presence, as though he
Were some grunt or primitive before
Them. ‘You want to show me

‘Yes.’ The man said standing tall and
Strong beside Kyrie now.

‘Jon, this…is- ‘Kyrie began to say.

‘Apollo.’ The man answered very
Casually, confidently. ‘You many call
Me, Apollo…But over the years I
Have had many names…. Depending
On who I am speaking with, and where.
I usually ask that they give me some
Variant name…for the era.’

‘Era?’ Jon half laughed.

‘I can tell you,’ This lady Ceres then
Added with a slightly cynical smile,
‘That the names suit some manner
Of his disposition.’

Apollo grinned and shut his eyes
Briefly trying not to laugh at some
Secret between them on this. ‘Let
Us be brief with words on this…
And remain as kindly to the point
As we can. In truth, we can’t stay
Long.’ Then he held out his hand
And gently waved for Jon to get out
Of bed. ‘Come…Let me show you.
There’s no way to explain it, you
Can see for yourself, decide for
Yourself….and put it in your own
Words. I know you have the sense
To see it right. So please, come with
Us, Jon. I promise you will be alright.’

Jon was intrigued. For the first time
He was being offered a sincere answer.
He got out of bed and quickly, modestly,
Pulled on his pair of trousers that
Were beside the bed and went with
These friendly visitors.

There was an awkward moment of
All four of them standing there
Staring at each other…They each
Smiled with enthusiasm, watching
Jon’s reaction to all of this, knowing
What was to come. Then there was a
Broad showering circle of silvery
White light that poured down all
Around them. A surge of energy
Filled the air, then suddenly they
Were all standing in a huge round
Steel-like looking room with many
Colored flashing little lights that
Blinked and twinkled from every
Surface…from the walls, and
Polished tables…and strange
Sleek-looking chairs all over.

Jon took it in as best he could, but
It all happened so fast. Before he
Could even ask a question Apollo
Held out his hand gesturing for Jon
To wait a moment more…Then he
Walked quickly over to this giant
Chair positioned higher in the center
Of the room…. He pressed some lights
On its wide arm-rests…Then he
Walked back over to them, waited a
Few seconds more…. Then another
Circle of light showered down on
Them, only this one was a white-gold

Jon understood now, they were being
Moved somehow…over great
Distances. How far, he could only
Imagine. The same tingling sensation
Filled the air again, and then they
Were standing in what appeared to be
In the center of a grassy-garden…
With some sort of tiled or paved
Walkways…surrounded by pillars
And groomed trees…and towering
Rose bushes intense with rich musky
Scents that overwhelmed the air. It
All seemed to be arranged, planted
And groomed into some giant
Cathedral of nature. There was a
Sense of balance to it all that put
Harmony into everything.

Apollo nodded once as he studied
Jon. He wasn’t just observing
Him, he was reading him as well,
Sensing his thoughts and perceptions
And enjoying every moment of it.
‘That’s right, Jon…Just look at
It. Mark everything that you feel,
Make a memory. Just…See it,
Look at it.’

‘What is this?’ Jon asked. ‘Is
It real?’

‘It’s real, Jon.’ Apollo told him.
‘You ARE here…This is not a dream.
Just keep looking at it.’ Then he
Gestured for Jon to come with him
A few steps to the side. ‘Now, I am sorry,
We do not have long. So, I am just
Going to ask you to keep looking…
Keep looking at everything.’

‘I do not understand why you are
Showing me this, why did you bring
Me here?’ Jon asked.

Apollo took him to one side of
This great round garden…to one
Of the four giant arches that stood
Around its circle, at precise points.
They appeared to be entrances. When
They reached the arch, the view
Immediately opened up and extended
Out as far as the eye could see…
‘Just look, Jon…’

There were two long mountain ranges
That ran along the length of either
Side of this long valley, there might
Have been another mountain range
At the far side opposite him, but he
Couldn’t be sure. The sight of it all
Was so much. The sky was a beautiful
Pale blue, but a bit hazy from high
Fog and cloud cover as though it
Had just rained. There was a generous
Amount of greenery extending with
A dip below. There were trees of all
Shapes and kinds, set with well
Manicured shrubs and blooming bushes
Again, all neatly arranged together,
But most of all, there was the intense
Overwhelming aroma of roses…

And there among all of this were
Buildings…everything looked
Very deliberately set and planned
So carefully. There were big domed
Buildings, and tall rectangular-like
Buildings that appeared to be built
Right into the mountainsides, as
Though they were built from the
Mountains. All of these were an
Ivory color, they were all curved
In some way, either along the
Edges or in their rooftops. Jon had
Never seen anything like it before.
He had never even imagined
Anything like it, nor had even heard
That such things existed. And
Everywhere he saw lights in the
Buildings glowing…but not like
A candle’s light or the lights of
A fire’s flame. No, these were lit
In some other way…

Jon was speechless. He saw it,
Felt it, but it still seemed impossible.
The only word that he could find to
Say was, ‘How?’

‘In time.’ Apollo told him watching
His face eagerly. ‘All that you need
To know is what you are seeing…
Right here, right now…IS REAL.
Just look at it. You need to know that.
And you need to know that…NOW.’

‘But why are you showing me this?’
Jon asked again.

Apollo held his words a moment
Before continuing. ‘Put it together
From what you’ve seen, Jon.’
He told him kindly. ‘I am not
Showing anyone else but you.’

‘It’s hard to think.’ Jon said.

Apollo laughed. ‘I know.’ Then
He looked out as he stood beside
Jon, admiring the view with great
Satisfaction. ‘There are…times
To come that are torrential with
Problems…. Ancients, not just in
The world you know, but from many
Places have tried to build such things…
And many never got it right. It’s a
Never ending process building such
A place.’

‘Is this paradise?’ Jon asked.

‘Oh, it’s more than that, Jon.’
Apollo told him. ‘Much more.
You see, paradise…is like a dream.
This is real. And that takes time.’

‘I would be afraid to stay.’ Jon
Weakly told him. ‘Or even visit.
I don’t feel good enough.’

Apollo smiled. ‘You have got to
Stop thinking like that. But…we
ARE very careful with WHO comes
Here. Think about that, Jon.’ Apollo
Said leaning a bit more seriously
Towards him, trying to tell him
Something with his words and
Tone…hoping that he would
Understand over time.

‘It’s beautiful.’ Jon could only
Say as he was overtaken by the
Immense view.

Apollo nodded once more, still
Admiring Jon’s reaction to
Everything. ‘It is beautiful. And
It takes A LOT of work…A lot
Of work. You can see that, right?
Such things do not spring up over
Night. It takes dedication, it takes
A lot of time…and the right people.’
Apollo’s eyes wandered back to
Ceres and Kyrie as they watched
Jon still smiling gently and

‘I could never have dreamed this.
It’s so…BIG.’ Jon could only say.
‘All the people that…made THIS.’

Apollo thought carefully, quickly.
‘Yes, it’s a lot of work…ongoing, it
Never ends…in building it, and
Maintaining it.’

‘But I still do not understand.’
Jon said. ‘Why are you showing
Me this? I can’t imagine why.’

‘All the things to search and strive
For.’ Apollo said with a mysterious
Tone. ‘Civilizations are built on
Ambition and broken backs…on
Ideas and fragments of dreams
Trying to bring something to life.
Let’s just say…we, are sowing seeds.’

‘Sowing seeds?’ Jon laughed.

‘Over time logic will build the path
To science…and in return, science
Will build with logic.’ Apollo told him.
‘But that’s incomplete, Jon. There are
A lot of missing pieces there that they
Will attempt to put together.’ Then he
Turned and gestured behind them, to
The garden that they stood in, the circle
Of its structure. ‘Nature and science…
Art and science…There are a lot of
Simple answers there. The shape of
Things, the arrangement of things. All
Put together. Look at it, just look at
It. The bridge between these things…
The intuition of art and nature with
Science…can make miraculous
Things, Jon…So simply.’

Jon did as he was asked and
Turned back to look at the
Circle…the garden, the structures
In it…The stones carved so
Precisely all around, like tiles…
All the colors, and the roses.

‘Everything in balance…’ Apollo
Mysteriously said. ‘From the
Positions, to the elements…All in
Balance…Even the air, the aroma
Yields a function. Don’t forget the
Roses, Jon.’

‘I don’t understand.’ Jon said briefly
Shaking his head. ‘What do you
Want me to do, draw a picture?’

Apollo laughed. ‘In time. Sowing seeds,
Jon. That’s what we’re doing.
Planning ahead.’

‘How far ahead?’ Jon asked.

‘Out of view, out of touch,
Outside of time…and treason.’
Apollo told him.

‘Is this a riddle?’ Jon said.

‘Just enough.’ Apollo answered surely.
‘Ripples, Jon…just ripples.’ He
Looked down sadly a moment
Before continuing. ‘Sooner or later
Things go wrong…and when they
Do something ends, then something
New begins…And that’s when
Opportunities arise, and the right
Ideas can work…miracles. Most
Will never see it. Oh, they will
Dismiss it and laugh and say…
That’s a creative idea, a hopeful
One…but others views and schemes
Push the right ideas out of the
Way…And a rotten cycle repeats.
Sometimes, you just have to
Encourage things…

‘But why show me?’ Jon begged.
‘I don’t see why. I live in a
Small village…in nowhere. I’m
Nothing. I couldn’t even begin
To draw this.’

‘From your mind, through his…
It’s like a…reflection. Apollo
Strangely offered. ‘Then I will show
Him…and in that…there will be
A balance.’

‘A balance for what?’ Jon asked.
He was really feeling foolish asking
So much…This was all so beyond him.

‘For the long road and a distant
New beginning. We’re just…sowing
Seeds, Jon.’ Apollo told him. ‘Now,
I’m sorry, my friend…But we
Are going to have to return you
Now. He gestured again for Jon
To go with him, then paused
Again and leaned back to Jon
With a shaky, yet serious
Expression. ‘Jon, I showed you
This for a reason. We don’t do
That so freely.’

Jon nodded awkwardly. Then
They returned him home the
Same way they came. And before
He knew it, he was laying back
In his bed as if he had never
Left…as if nothing ever happened.
But despite the overwhelming
Sense of everything…all the
Visits, all that had happened…
He still lay there just wildly
Wondering why…

And before he fell asleep, he
Heard the voice one more time.
Apollo’s voice gently telling him.
‘Don’t forget about the roses,

Valiant: Knock Knock…The Sandman…The Gift…Part 16…

He dwelt in the dreams of night…lost
In thoughts, overwhelmed by what had
Happened and by what he sensed was
Yet to come. And dreams gave him
Glimpses, just brief visions that his
Mind’s eye caught when his feelings
Went numb. It seemed like it would
Never end, only continue until the
Mystery could find the one who could
Chase it the way it had to be.

Jon woke in the morning recalling
Hazy images of faces and places…
With a strong pull to the west. But he
Had no time to think it through right
Away, he had to get moving. There
Were chores to do, there were always
Chores to do. He went to breakfast
And ate quietly, no one said anything
About the night before. His family
Had short memories at times, especially
When eating. Only the coming day’s
Plans were discussed quickly, then
Everyone left the table one by one…
And Jon went off to do his work alone.

Jon took care of the animals while
His father and grandfather tended to
Plantings for crops they needed. It was
A typical day, nothing unusual. By
Mid-day he took the goats out for grazing
With the horses this time. And while he sat
And rested beneath a fir tree he found
The time to think things over once again.

The visits, the dreams…they were
Building more and more. But to what
End? He thought of Mira and Baja’s
Words…about the dark winning so
Much, and good winning in the end.
It was a lot to think about. And still
He fought his place in that. It made
No sense, he was no one…just some
Village farm boy with simple wishes.
If only those simple wishes could come

But he resisted dwelling on things too
Much. It was far more peaceful fussing
Over the animals. They were innocent
And kind, they never hurt anyone. His
Geese however could be very loud and
Protective, he always laughed at that. A
Goose and a goat were his favorite friends.
And the horses…animals sure knew people
Better than anything.

Time flew fairly fast, and as he
Watched the sun he knew the time…
Then brought the animals back home
To the barn before dinner. They ate
Early then, so that by dark everyone was
Ready for bed…to be up by dawn for
The next new day, and the whole process
Would repeat all over again.

Days passed this way. And then yet again,
An odd feeling filled the air. It was a foggy,
Dismal Friday night that started with a
Slow sprinkling rain…then thunder, then
Finally, a light steady soaking rain.
Everything just felt wet and soggy.

The family had eaten dinner and went to
Bed…. And as Jon lay in his own bed,
All that he could do was lay there quietly
Listening to the rain…and the loud
Snarling sounds of his grandfather snoring
From his room across the house. How
Could anyone sleep with that awful
Noise? He was surprised a man of
His age could even produce such a
Sound…the crackles of the thunder
Earlier were more welcoming. And their
Dogs slept in his grandparents’ room…
The poor animals must either think
Some giant bear had entered the house,
Or the man was deathly ill or something.

And finally, after what seemed like
Forever…his grandfather’s snoring
Ended…along with the rain outside,
Maybe it was nature’s way of demanding
Silence, enough already. Jon was about to
Pass out when his ear caught a new sound
Somewhere near. Very slight at first, then
Building…it sounded like tree branches
Bending or being moved just outside…
And then came a pause of absolute silence….
A sense of something knowing that it
Was heard, a presence. Jon’s eyes flew
Open, they twitched darted back and forth
Thinking, feeling, noting every little thing.
He waited but did not move. No, nothing
Was IN his room…he knew that much.

Then slowly, there was the sound of
Something scraping across his bedroom
Window outside…like a branch almost.
But there was no tree close enough
To his window to strike it in such a way.
And then his mind thought, ‘claws?’
No…. he had to or wanted to dismiss
That idea. He sat up fast and stared at
The window. And there it was again,
The scratching and scraping, only more
Pronounced. He struggled to see in the
Dark but it was pointless. So, he rose
And went to the window and looked out
Blackness…There was NOTHING.

He stood there for a few minutes
Watching, waiting to see something…
But all that he could see was the
Emptiness of the dark night through
The glass. His mind struggled to
Tell him to simply go back to sleep
And ignore it, but his legs wouldn’t
Move. All that he could do was stand
There and look out staring in a daze.

Then it came, a low whisper. ‘Come
Outside. I wish to speak with you.’

Jon leaned back at the dull voice,
That only gently made itself audible
To hear. He was confused yet intrigued.
Someone WAS there…He turned fast
And went to the kitchen in his nightshirt.
Then he grabbed one of the stick candles
From the cupboard and lit the wick
In what embers still glowed in the
Stove by blowing and fanning a flame
To life on it. Then he held the candle
Up and went to the door and went outside.

He stood just a few steps from the
Doorway in the dark…holding the candle
Out before him looking every which
Way, but saw nothing. He didn’t have
To wait long before the whisper came

‘Over here…come over here, I wish
To speak to you…’

Jon’s eyes shot right to the sound and
Focused intensely on the barn. He
Cringed with hesitation. How could
It be in there? He fought to make
Sense of it. This did not feel like his
Familiar stranger, nor anyone else he
Knew or had ever met. No, this felt
Different, this felt new. And with each
New moment felt heavier. But he had
To know now…Who was it, who
Was it this time…in the middle of the

Slowly Jon took cautious footsteps
To the barn. He focused on every little
Thing that he could…the sounds, the
Movement. The animals gave no noise
Or commotion, that seemed important.
Why was everything so quiet with this
Following all the ruckus of the storm
Earlier…. Had the storm brought something,
Or it had it been a warning of something
To come?

He was about to open the barn door
When he slipped in the wet dirt beneath
His feet and fell face flat in the mud.
Yet somehow, he managed to hold his
Hand up and save the flame of the
Candle from going out. He groaned
With embarrassment. Yes, that just
Had to happen. Then he rose to his
Feet and tried to wipe the mud off…
A worthless attempt in the dark.

Then the whisper came again…’Just
Come inside…’

Jon’s eyes raised, his brow arching
To the voice. He had to know, so he
Went on…opened the barn door and
Went inside. He looked around, none
Of the animals moved or made a
Sound. But their eyes caught the
Light of the candle when they saw
Him…they bulged so wide, they
Were terrified. He moved farther
Inside slowly…. he was about to move
To pet one of the horses when his
Eyes caught the form of a figure
Standing in the far corner of the barn
Opposite him. He froze.

‘Hello Jon.’ The form said from the

Jon just stood frozen watching and
Said nothing.

Then the figure took a step closer,
Then another and another…until
Finally, it was close enough to reveal
Itself in the light. It was a man, he
Appeared middle-aged with yellowy-
Blond hair…well-built and proportioned.
He had almost a handsome face…had
It not been for the solid black eyes that
Blinked with blaring red pupils as he
Watched him.

Jon was taken back by what he saw
That he held his breath fast. Those
Eyes! The darkness that they held
Was beyond description.

‘I wanted to speak with you.’ The
Man said with a clearer tone now.

Jon just stood motionless saying
Nothing…an overwhelming instinct
Taking over telling him what to do.

‘Do you know who I am?’ The
Man said slowly smiling to
Reveal a chilling set of perfect
Teeth set on jet black gums. His
Features were just so menacing
That it was impossible to ignore.

Jon waited for the words to come…

And the man hid his teeth beneath
A casual smile, then looked around
At the barn and the animals. ‘Hmm…
A nice simple place you have here.’
He arched his head strangely upwards
Taking on an icy pose then he turned
And stared into Jon strongly. ‘I wanted
To see you…Ah well, it is pointless
To waste time. So, allow me to introduce
Myself…My name is *****…’

Jon’s eyes bulged when he heard it.

‘Ah, so you know the name? It’s not
What you expected…is it?’ The man
Said calmly as if it were nothing. ‘It’s
From Genesis…in the Bible…’ He
Sighed. ‘A Great BIG Tower was built
And named after me. Though no one
Pronounces it correctly…You have to
Know HOW to say it you see, But I’m
Telling you, so now…you know. You
Must never reveal this to anyone. Do
You understand? But I am telling you…
So you may call me…And I think you
Know why.’

Jon said nothing, only listened.

‘I am known as The Great Conqueror
And Divider…That is what I do. I
Divide and conquer nations. And they
Serve me…whether they know it or
Not…. I have been to many places, I
Am here now. And soon, I will go to
A new land…flowing with milk and
Honey…to the west. And I will make
It my own…And then others, until
They are all MINE.’

Jon could say nothing.

‘Really, Jon, don’t look so surprised.
All stories come from somewhere…
Even those in the bible.’ The man
Paused watching Jon intensely. ‘You
Are VERY interesting Jon, very
Interesting…. Not many things interest

Jon could only listen.

‘I am going to make you an offer. You
Leave me alone…and I will leave you
Alone.’ The man told him in an
Eerily kind way. ‘Because I will have
Things my way Jon…OR, I will have
My servants make you miserable and
Attack you…Do you understand?’

Jon watched him with blank
Expression only.

The man eyed Jon up and down then
Met his eyes sharply. ‘Their souls are
Mine, they will be mine…That is what
I do…. I will divide and conquer them
One by one…They won’t even know
It’s happening…one land at a time, until
I have the whole world. Then I will
Divide it again and conquer it AGAIN…
And rebuild it as I want. It will happen,
Oh, it will happen.’ He stared harder
Into Jon. ‘Oh I have many forms…to
Each nation…Ah, but you sensed that

Their eyes met each other’s like walls
Of ice.

‘To the End….’ The man told him as he
Started walking out of the barn. ‘They
Will worship me in one way or another…
With some mysticism or promise made…
Some hope they made up…Right to the
End. They won’t know which way to
Turn, just as long as someone is promising
Them…something. I will push the very
Nature of them to their limits…. They
Will look for answers in the end…and
They won’t find them…The Great
Conqueror and Divider.’ He gave out
One loud laugh for himself, and was about
To leave the barn when he paused once
More and leaned back to say… ‘If they
Attack you, or when they do…That’s the
Sign The End is Coming, Jon. It’s coming.’
He held onto the barn door watching him.
‘You know…you and I should learn to be
Friends, Jon. Because I will do all that
I have told you…and you will watch it
Happen, you will. Just wait. But if you ever
Choose to surrender…You know my
Name…We really should learn to get
Along…’ Then he walked off and was

Jon let out a long deep breath and panted
For air. After everything, now THIS?
What was happening? He panicked
As his mind raced in every direction…
To form thoughts, to form ideas of
What to think…this BEING was REAL?
There were no doubts…his heart raced and
Felt like it would pound out of his chest.
Then some revelation struck him…a
Flash of Light, of lightning filled his

‘Wait,’ Jon thought to himself. ‘The Angel,
God…God is real, the Angel was real. This
Is real. Of course, the Dark would be real
Then too. This visit was for a reason…but
Why? What could he do?’ Only more senses
Filled his head…’There must be something
This being knew or wanted, something he
Was hiding…dividing to separate secrets
And sacred beliefs…A giant puzzle? Some
Must know this, but how many? Only a few?
There must be so much more.’

Jon patted the animals then and staggered
Back into the house and into his bed in
A daze. He didn’t even think of cleaning
Off the mud. Sleep came some time after
That…without the dreams or words…
And when he awoke in the morning the
Proof was in the dirt caked dry to his skin
And clothes. And when he saw that, again
There were no words to think.

And with the morning, breakfast came,
Jon said nothing. Everything was numb.
He moved onto the day finding the will to
Continue through habitual chores trying
To think as little as possible.

On and on this went, the afternoon and
Then the night. For days he managed by
Habit only, routine chores that kept
Things going. No one noticed much that
He didn’t speak, his family just
Assumed he had finally learned
To be quietly obedient and they
Were very content with that.

But a dismal oppressive feeling
Began to grow and spread, not just
In his house but in the entire village
As well. There was more talk of
Unrest, people were arguing more
And more…over the smallest
And most irrational things. Times
Were tough all over and everyone
Fought to compare who suffered
More…whose loss was greater, who
Hurt the most. It really just seemed
As though people just wanted to
Fight…as if something was dividing

And there were ACCIDENTS…
Lots of them…with everyone. Most
In the strangest ways, and some with
Tragic consequences or endings. From
The loss of livestock, to bizarre
Calamities that burned homes and
Barns…to illnesses that struck the
Young, the old and weak and took
Loved ones…It just kept happening.

Even at Jon’s home, in fact
Especially there…a series of accidents
Plagued the family. His father, in
A fit of rage, struggling with their wagon,
Fell and had his legs crushed
Beneath it…crippling him. His
Sister became seriously ill…predators
Ravaged their flocks, their herd and
Their crops. His grandmother suffered
A series of heart attacks mysteriously
In the night…The family just
Could not keep up, and this
Continued for months.

This meant more work, twice as much
For the able-bodied to do. There was
No choice, if you could stand then
You were fit to work. There was no
Time for anything else. Jon’s grandfather
Became a tyrant, full of rage with
The demand to do more…but at his
Age he was more of a burden than
Any help at all. With three seriously
Ill family members and a farm to
Care for…life became hell. Months
Went on this way…and there was
Nothing to do about it but accept
What it was.

The fall harvest came with
Pitiful results. With such small
Yields, they would be forced on tiny
Rations or starve in the coming
Winter. Life felt utterly conquered.

The Christmas Season came with no
Joy or enthusiasm. There were no
Sweets or songs…the family was
Thankful just to have bread, a
Slice of ham for breakfast…and
A potato a day. Tough times made
Them learn to be grateful for every
Small thing.

And then, on Christmas Eve…beneath
A bright starry sky, Jon’s Christmas
Visitor came again. She appeared as
Always bathed in a ring of white
Light, sitting on his bed, with a smile.
But this time when she saw him
The light of hope she had, turned
To horror. ‘Jon, what happened?’

He simply turned to look at her
With a half-smile and said
Nothing. He had no words to offer.

She sat there studying him, a
Beautiful vision…now so confused.
She thought she knew so well…
It was written all over her face,
That sense of knowing…it was
All gone. Somehow, a lot of fine
Details had been lost in how she
Monitored him, and this clearly
Frightened her a lot. Something was
Seriously wrong.

As he lay in bed watching her look
At him full of concern silently he
Suddenly heard voices outside of his
Bedroom door. The door was wide
Open. And then he wondered, ‘Wait,
How did she get in?’

But before he could ask aloud, he
Heard the voices outside more clearly…
‘Just wait, just listen.’ A man’s
Voice said – a voice he knew!
‘I have to hear this…’

‘Oh look, a mouse!’ A woman’s
Voice exclaimed outside the doorway.
‘Oh, how sweet! He is adorable.’

‘Ceres, will you please pay attention.’
The strange visitor instructed.

‘I was watching the mouse.’ This Ceres
Replied fast. ‘Why am I here? I
Want to go see the animals in the barn.
They have goats, geese, horses? I want
To see them.’

‘Ceres!’ The visitor he knew said.

‘Don’t tell me what to do.’ Ceres snapped,
Their silhouettes occasionally
Moving into view. ‘Look here, look there…
The mouse sees more. To gain an insight
Expand your views. If you want to see
Then see for yourself.’

‘Ceres!’ The familiar man said. ‘You
Know our time is limited. Please say
As little as possible so he won’t hear

There was a brief pause before she
Answered. ‘Shall I squeak then? Or
Hide until the time comes?’

It seemed as the familiar man was
Rolling his eyes with frustration. ‘Why
Is the timing always this way?’

Finally, Jon could not take it any
Longer. ‘Who is that? Are you ever
Going to tell me names?’

The lady smiled as she sat with Jon,
Then sighed as if to say it was time.
‘I’m Kyrie…And that is my sister, Ceres.
Ciri…as my father called her.’

Valiant: Knock Knock…The Sandman…The Gift…Part 15…

A secret moment had arrived, but
So few knew it. There was an
Overwhelming sense of everything
Turning inside out with a convergence
Of reason as if guided by the
Stars. And there above rising
Through the trees to beckon the time
Was a full Spring moon…

Jon’s eyes widened to see the
Silver sphere rising, he squinted straining
To understand what his mind saw in it.
The moon was rising so early. ‘It’s getting
Late. I really should get the goats home
Before my family begins to wonder
Where I am.’

‘No, just stay a while.’ Raya reassured
Him patting his hand. ‘I will have my
Grandsons go and watch your flock
For you.’ Then she waved to the two
Teenage boys to go and do as she asked
So they could keep Jon just a while longer.
‘Jon, I think you need good company for
Just a while longer. Just be calm.’

‘You look like you need a lot of good
Rest.’ Her daughter Mira insisted with
A stern nod. ‘But I believe you are not
Finding much peace in sleep.’

‘No.’ Jon confessed with his head held
Down. ‘When I sleep, I dream…and
See things I don’t want to…or don’t

‘You dream about things before they
Happen.’ Raya said in an eerie tone.

‘Sometimes.’ Jon admitted.

‘You know which ones will.’ Raya added.
She studied Jon’s face carefully as he said
Nothing. ‘And this upsets you.’

‘Lately its been happening more and
More.’ He said.

She grinned. ‘The gift of a seer…. You
Know for ages it has been a highly prized
Gift…coveted. We have discussed this,

‘Yes, I remember.’ He nodded.

‘You know the gift comes with a price…
For those that really have it.’ She said
With her head tiled down with a sad
But kind expression. ‘They see their own

He met her eyes slowly and silently.
He just couldn’t find the words to reply.

‘I understand, Jon. I do.’ Raya told
Him as she took his hand in hers. ‘Others
Will never understand this…Most just
Laugh and dismiss it…All they want
Are fortunes and promises of love…They
See a price in coins, that’s all they see,
Nothing more. Not fate…not the toll that
It takes or how it comes…They just want
The shortest and easiest answer.’

‘So why do it then? Why have this way
Of life?’ Jon asked, begged. ‘I still think
It’s a curse.’

‘Its not a choice.’ Mira insisted gently.
‘Its different for everyone. But for us, my
Family…It is something that we wander
And search for. To search for answers as
Well…Why? How? To help someone, a
Few…and find an answer in that someway.
But you can’t do that for everyone. That’s
Impossible. You have to help yourself
First. You have to learn how to stand before
You can walk.’

‘And there are different gifts. With each
One comes a different road.’ Raya said
As she looked about their wagon and her
Family. ‘You learn things over the years.
If a group is too large its chaos…Like a
Herd of beasts, a lot of little things get
Lost…Important things. Smaller groups
Work better, they can work wonders.
But again, that depends on the road you
Travel…We have seen so many things.’

‘And people.’ Mira added with a laugh.
‘And the more we meet, the more the
Stories sound the same…everywhere.
Its funny really.’

‘You learn to be creative when you
Speak.’ Raya said. ‘You have to be…
Its kinder that way, and more valuable.
If, when good fortunes are told…The
Best way is with a story. They are
Priceless this way…Good stories are
Supposed to teach, impart a message
And have very relevant prophetic
Verses…People remember them that
Way…and tell others.’

‘Isn’t everyone ALWAYS trying to
Tell a story?’ Mira asked him. ‘Aren’t
They in some way? Only most say
I…all the time…or me, what about me?’

‘And that’s when I say,’ Raya added
With a raised brow and serious tone,
‘What about you? What…about…you?
Everyone struggles, has pain, loss….
You can’t have all the answers, there
Would be no point in going on…we
Overcome each obstacle and become
Stronger for the long road…beyond
This. Because there must be more,
More than this…there must be.’ Then
She took a deep breath and sighed.
‘You tell them what you can, as best
You can…you give them some hope
And truth…and hopefully that’s a
Little more than they had before.’

‘But sharing visions isn’t an answer
For everyone. How can it be?’ Jon
Asked. ‘Doesn’t it make you tired,
When they ask so much of you?’

‘I have dreams of meeting people
And talking to people, sharing
Fortunes. So that is what I do.’ Raya
Just smiled.

‘The funny dreams are the romantic
Ones.’ Mira laughed. ‘Or the erotic
Dreams we hear…Those are the ones
To dismiss, so many have those…so
Many.’ She said shaking her head. ‘I
Can’t tell you how many people come
With stories about them…it’s something
Most never stop thinking about.’

‘Mine aren’t like that.’ Jon told them.
‘Something must be wrong with me, I
Don’t dream about romance or anything
Like that…I see things…sometimes broad
And sometimes small…I don’t dream of
Love or of legends…. I see things in
Dreams that scare me. Messages, symbols,
About being swept away into, or onto…
some kind of journey that I did not want…
and can not control. Why?’

‘Jon…I’ve sat here with you, I know
You unlike others…Now I have to say…
There is obviously a bigger plan at
Work for you.’ She said. ‘I know you
Do not want to hear that, but you have to.’

He fought to accept her words and
Bit his lip before admitting it. ‘I’m
Trying to.’

Mira arched her head slightly then at
Him. ‘The stars in the sky at night…
The way they move more and more…
You notice them, don’t you? Everyone
Does, more are noticing them. We
Hear about this.’ Then she looked at
Her mother, ‘What he saw…those lights.
Something is coming soon.’

‘We all sense this.’ Raya agreed. ‘And
More are wondering about it. How can
They not? And the fear and uncertainty
Is bringing out an ugly side in some…
And the best in others. That also says
A lot. Its almost like a judgement

‘There are so many ideas about these
Things…but most are afraid to discuss
It…out loud at least.’ Mira nodded.

‘And some talk way too much about
It.’ Raya’s husband said seriously as
He could not help but wander over
And join their conversation. ‘Sometimes
Too much talking is just that, too much.
Faith and devotion say much more…
Those that push too much for a fast
Answer find nothing…Some answers
Never come, maybe they’re not meant
For everyone…The wisest wait.’

‘Patience is also a gift.’ Raya smiled
At her husband, proud of his words.
Most of her family gave sound counsel…
Well, most of the time.

Mira turned to Jon curiously. ‘You
Saw these lights up close…The little
Men that you described…and this light
That was put in your head…. What do
You think it means?’ All of them
Then stared intently at Jon eager to
Hear what he had to say.

He held his breath a moment at the
Pressure…But then, as if some
Mysterious insight inside him took
Over…’I never thought of those
Things before. They always scared
Me. But I think, I believe…they are
Here waiting to see which way this
World is going to go. It’s a turning
Point somehow. They know there’s
Something different here now…that
Could bring a shift. I’m not sure if
They are competing for it, or trying
To control it…but I do know they
Are watching and waiting.’

‘But what are they? Who are they?’
Mira asked. ‘You have been so
Close to so many strange things…
Just as we have. What do you see?’

‘Yes.’ Raya added eagerly. ‘What
Do you see?’

‘You won’t like my answer.’ Jon
Told them.

‘No, no.’ Raya replied. ‘Believe me,
I understand…. The hardest things to
Hear…are often what you need to
Listen to the most.’

Jon watched their faces, their eyes…
And saw the respect they were
Giving him. That was so rare for
Him. The only one who had ever
Admired his views was Heinz…he
Missed that. And in that respect, they
Gave him, he found his way to speak.
‘Some are not from here…And some
I believe are from another time and
Place somehow…And they are trying
To influence things…to shape this
World. One is trying to move it in
A dark way….and another is trying
To prevent that…It feels, territorial.’

Raya’s eyes opened wide. ‘That
Feels precisely true. I can not
Understand why…But when you
Say that, I can feel it now.’

‘The real question then becomes…
Who will win?’ Baja asked them.

‘In stories Good always wins….
In the end.’ Mira speculated.

‘Those are stories, fairy tales.’ Baja
Scowled. ‘That is what we are led
To believe…But in truth, if Good
Always wins…then why is the world
This way? No, it seems more that
The Dark has won more in the past.’

‘She said Good wins in the end.’
Raya responded. ‘This is not the end.
This isn’t even the beginning, maybe
Just somewhere in between.’

‘So, when is the end then?’ Mira
Wondered. ‘Is that what we have
To wait for…to see if Good will
Win? What time would that be?’

Raya thought carefully…remembering
A night years ago when a strange
Visitor appeared with a message
Before she gave a young girl a fortune.
It was as if lighting struck her…A
Special baby…Then she stared at
Jon…but was too terrified to say
What thoughts struck her mind…
She could only mumble the words,
‘Every 4-500 years it happens.’

‘What happens?’ Baja asked.

‘Some celestial…message or gift.’
Raya answered, her eyes seeming
To stare far away.

Jon squinted at her words. How could
She have said that? Then he felt a
Shiver up his spine. ‘But a lot have
Gifts though.’

‘Puzzle pieces.’ Raya wondered aloud.
‘Some do have gifts, yes. But different

‘So, are you saying,’ Mira said turning
To her mother,’ ‘That we are on this
World…just like some players on
A game board? On some one or
Some things territory?’

‘It appears that way.’ Raya could only

‘Still,’ Baja added, ‘If this is not
The end…then that can only mean…
The Dark road is not over. That
Should tell us who wins now.’

‘Have hope, Father.’ Mira pleaded.

‘Everything just seems to be
Getting so big so fast.’ Jon said.

‘The world is large, my friend.’ Baja
Told him. ‘To have hope in such a
Large world…its better to know fewer
People then.’ He laughed.

A tense moment of silence. Then
Raya took a deep breath. ‘There
Are those that believe in one
Absolute creation…In God, one God,
And that this world is all there is…
Yet to look up at the stars at night…
How can this be all there is? No,
There has to be more…it makes
Sense. Someday there will be
Answers on this. What those answers
Are…’ She looked at them with a
Heavy brow, certain about what
She was saying, ‘It would be best
To be open to any answer…no
Matter how it sounds.’

‘A man once told me…’ Jon said
Very carefully. ‘That…we…are
Not from here…. And that we have
Family,’ he looked up and pointed
With his eyes to the sky and the
Stars beyond, ‘Out there.’

They all stared at Jon with keen
Expressions…a little shocked,
A little scared…but absolutely
Believing him. Somehow his
Words did not seem so far-fetched
At all. ‘I really should go now,’
He said standing fast, ‘My family
Will really wonder where I am.
They will be angry.’ He started
To walk off when…

‘Jon…Who is he?’ Raya dared
To ask.

‘Who?’ Jon answered.

‘The man, the tall man that comes
Sometimes…then vanishes.’ Raya
Said boldly, desperately trying
To read more from him…. but she

‘I don’t know what you mean.’
He responded avoiding her eyes.

‘Yes, you do.’ Mira said.

‘I can’t give you that answer.’
Jon only said. ‘I really should go
Now…I hope…I will try to
Visit you once again before you

‘Be well my friend.’ They each said
To him kindly. ‘Please stay well…
And Safe. Take care of yourself.’

Jon left quietly, their eyes following
His every step until he was out of
Sight through the trees. Then he
Went to the meadow and met Raya’s
Grandsons as they watched his goats.
He thanked them, then ushered the
Flock away back home. When he
Arrived back at his house, his family
Was already sitting down to dinner.
They were upset waiting for him as
He expected…His father was the
First to speak as Jon entered through
The front door. ‘Where have you
Been?’ He asked angrily.

Jon had already planned his
Explanation, he dare not tell them
About the gypsies…that would
Make things so much worse. ‘I
Fell asleep in the meadow. I passed
Out…I was so tired…I’m sorry.’

‘Asleep?’ His father snapped. ‘Too
Much work watching the goats graze?
That is too hard for you?’

‘Please Helmut.’ His mother begged.
‘The boy is not well, he has been ill.’

His father held his tongue for now,
But fought giving his son a good slap.
‘Next time pay more attention to
The time.’

‘You would be much better off
Getting married.’ His grandmother
Had to say. ‘Someone to care for you…
Children to help around the farm…
Don’t you want to be a good son,
Make your grandmother happy, and
Give me grandchildren? What
Is a family without sweet babies
Running around?’

Jon froze…stood there watching
Them eat. Years of memories
Flashed through his eyes. What was
There to remember? Nothing sweet.
Then something rose within him
And the words just came out. ‘I
Am NOT getting married and having
Children just to make you happy…
What, for more children to slap around?’

Everyone froze in shock and looked
At him. Even his father was
Stunned. ‘Jon…what you said
To your grandmother! What a
Worthless brat you are!’ His
Grandfather growled. ‘You apologize

‘I’m not sorry I said it.’ Jon
Said strongly, even coldly.

‘That attitude of yours,’ his father
Responded hard, ‘needs to be
Broken. I didn’t raise you that
Way…You don’t need to eat tonight.
You go to your room and get to
Bed…You need to think more about

Jon said nothing, he simply turned
And went to his room as requested
And shut the door, shutting
Everything out. But inside he felt
A quiet victory…and felt a
Little stronger than before. Then
Suddenly he didn’t feel as sick
Either…as if something rising
Within fought it off.

Hours passed until darkness came.
He lay in his bed quietly, not a
Thought in his head…he simply
Stared at the ceiling…waiting.
Once he felt the house was
Absolutely quiet with everyone
Asleep…there was a slight shuffling
Sound, a soft footstep. Then the
Stranger emerged from the shadowy
Corner of his room…out of

‘I knew you would be there again.’
Jon said.

‘I know.’ He replied.

‘Why are you doing this to me?’ Jon

‘Jon, I’m not doing it.’ The tall
Stranger answered. His face had
The kindest expression…wise,
Patient and knowing, even though
He said so little. ‘I am here
To help you, that’s all.’

‘Because no one else can.’ The
Stranger said watching him. ‘They
Don’t know how…that’s why I
Am asking you to listen to me.’

‘I keep thinking about Jeff. Why?’ Jon

‘There is a connection there. That’s
Why.’ The stranger said.

‘He’s like me?’ Jon asked.

‘Similar, yes.’ The stranger said. ‘But
He went through something much
Worse. You can never talk about
That, not ever…An Angel gave
Him a gift too…only his came
At 3 in the afternoon.’

‘I told him what you said.’ Jon
Went on. ‘He has other gifts,
That’s why.’

The stranger nodded. ‘We need
Him for something. Many were
Selected with tests…only a few
Passed them.’

‘Is this about me or him?’ Jon

‘Both.’ The stranger said, then
Looked around Jon’s room as he
Walked around his bed…and slowly
Stopped to meet his eyes. ‘They
Were warned once about particle
Accelerators…about the universe
And life elsewhere…to respect their
Neighbors…or there would be
Consequences. A certain amount
Of time was allotted for this.’

‘What is a particle accelerator?’
Jon asked.

‘Well…it is basically about power,’
The stranger said, ‘But it affects
All natures of things…properly
Managed it is a wonderful
Energy…poorly managed…it can
Tear a universe apart…even
Dimensions…Even a small accident
Creates ripples…and can be felt
In worlds and universes far far
Away…One bad ripple can really
Anger some things.’

‘I don’t understand.’ Jon could only say.

‘What it means, Jon, is…’ The stranger
Said mysteriously. ‘The universe, or
Rather higher aspects of it…responds
To such things to correct it…
And if it can not correct it,
Or is not allowed to…then

Valiant: Knock Knock…The Sandman…the Gift…Part 14…

1559 Nuremberg, Germany

Returned in the night from an impossible
Journey through a dream, that was much
More than a dream, Jon seemed to fall into
Bed as though he fell through a void. But
He rested still fast, comforted quickly by
A guided hand and the strong presence
Of the mysterious stranger. He simply
Closed his eyes as they were filled with
Hazy images of the past, present and
Future…A collision of impressions
Engulfing his senses by a slip in time.

The mystery man remained close to
Watch him carefully to make sure he
Adjusted alright. ‘Rest Jon.’ He told
Him kindly as he slept. ‘Just take it in
Let it go. You did great. That’s all you
Need to know right now.’

The man stood there a moment watching
Him sleep with a smile. Then he looked
Slowly around his room, at the furniture…
The architecture…How simple everything
Was, so simple…yet such a harsh world.
The idea and the chances of words to
Say were ridiculous to measure. But then
He blinked and smiled once more and
Looked at Jon and said, ‘Jon…I’m going
To tell you something. It won’t make any
Sense to you I know…but…for a word
Somewhere in time it will.

In the universe there is creation and logic…
There will always be a contest between
The two…creativity is a variable that
Creates…And logic is the understanding.
There will always be two…If the universe
Was ever to send a message…It would be,
If you push control of creation, there will
Always be something new…It doesn’t
Happen very often, maybe every 4 or 500
Years, but it does happen…Sleep peacefully
Jon.’ And then the stranger vanished.

When morning came Jon awoke surprisingly
Well rested, even invigorated for some
Reason. He remembered the dream and
Strange words very clearly—even too
Clearly, as though they were more real
Than being awake. He got dressed and went
To breakfast cheerfully, his mood even
Brightened up everyone in the house…
Even the sun shined brighter that day,
And the sky was clear shade of blue. It
Was almost as if the weather mirrored
His feelings. But maybe it was too crazy
To think that way. The entire day continued
This way, and things didn’t seem so bad
At all.

A week went by very calmly, just
Chores and daily boring routines
For Jon. But that strange dream haunted
Jon in a good way…He could not get
That Jeff out of his mind, he almost
Looked like he could have been an
Older brother of his somehow. But he
Had never seen him before ever. He
Had only met him once so briefly,
But it seemed as though he had always
Known him…there was just no
Explanation or sense about it.

And then, almost exactly to the day…
One week later as he was eating
Breakfast with his family, there
Was another knock on the front door…

Knock Knock…

And before the door even opened,
Jon just knew that was Mr. Kingsman
Back for another visit. His family
Greeted the man very kindly…then
He asked to speak to Jon outside
Alone, away from everyone of course.

Mr. Kingsman was very polite
And smiled as they walked away from
The house, a safe distance for a
Private conversation. ‘How are
You Jon? I just had to come see you
Again, I could not stop thinking
About you.’

Jon held himself surprisingly well,
Very calm…that dream experience
Had given him fuel. ‘I’m alright,
Sir. How are you?’

‘Oh, I’m good, I’m good.’ Mr.
Kingsman said carefully looking
Around eyeing the property. ‘I
Just wanted to see what you
Thought about my offer.’

Jon stood quietly a moment looking
Down at his feet, the ground, the
Grass. His mind just needed to
Keep it simple, as simple as
Possible. ‘Oh, I don’t think so, Sir.
I appreciate your offer, I really do.
But I’m just me, just quiet boring

Mr. Kingsman laughed kindly as
He eyed the farm again sizing it up.
‘Yes well, you know I do not make
This offer to anyone. People usually
Beg me for a job…You would not
Believe how people beg, the things
That they will do…’ Then he looked
At Jon and smiled carefully. ‘You
Know you could really go places…
Everyone wants to go places Jon.
The things they will do…I have a
Good eye for things, you could go
Places…I know people…They would
Really like you…’

Jon smiled politely back and looked
Around at the farm. ‘Maybe…but
I like this life. I always wanted a
Farm of my own…some place safe
And quiet. I just see the world getting
Crazier and crazier…. Everyone wants
So much all the time. I love the animals,
I swear some times I think animals
Are better than most people.’

Mr. Kingsman laughed. ‘They are
Amazing…Of all living things in
All their diversity…Such simple
Creatures bring such peace, and
Contentment. And yet in their
Design nothing is more efficient
With little demand…Like the birds.’

‘I love birds.’ Jon smiled as he
Watched some wild doves fly by
Overhead just at that moment. ‘They
Just spread their wings and fly, and
Soar….And so many kinds, some
Sing…some dance.’

‘And they are the most efficient
Hunters as well.’ Mr. Kingsman
Added as they watched the skies
For birds together. ‘A bird of prey
Can spot its target from towering
Heights and dive strike so fast…
And an owl by night with its silent
Wings…you will never hear it
Coming…Great hunters birds are,
Such GREAT hunters.’

‘And the patterns of the feathers.’
Jon added. ‘The detail, the artistry…
Reflect all sorts of things in nature.’

‘There’s a lot to see in so many
Ways.’ Mr. Kingsman said with
Respect. ‘A lot of clues there…
You have a good eye for things,

Jon half smiled recalling a
Strange memory, ‘Did you know
That hummingbirds appear in
The summer…and they sometimes
Fly right up to my face and just
Hover, staring at me. It’s like
They’re seeing something…
Something that…’ He caught his
Breath and shied away from saying
More. ‘I don’t know, maybe it’s
Nothing. My family always says
That I think too much.’

‘Some people do.’ Mr. Kingsman
Nodded with a gentle laugh.
‘Some people think too much, and
Don’t notice anything. It’s all in
How they speak…No, I think
You are just fine, Jon.’

‘So, what is it then with the
Hummingbirds?’ Jon asked. ‘Is
It magic or something?’

Mr. Kingsman just grinned slyly.
‘No, animals notice things…. And
Magic?’ He let out a loud laugh
At that word. ‘Let me tell you
Something about magic, Jon…A
Little secret that most people will
Never know…’

Jon’s interest peaked as he thought
About the gypsies and what they
Told him.

‘There’s all kinds of magic in the
World, Jon…. all kinds.’ Mr.
Kingsman said very seriously, and
In a way that spoke from experience
And not ego. ‘Now the thing about
Magic is…IF magic was available
Freely…everyone out there in the
World would want it, Jon…
EVERYONE. You would see all
Sorts of little peddlers and shops
Of all kinds selling potions and
Spells and little totems, making all
Sorts of claims EVERYWHERE…
Do you have any idea of how
Dangerous or crazy the world would
Be if just anyone could just go out
And randomly buy magic? No, No…
Real magic is rare, and found in a
Precious few…You can not buy it,
No matter what anyone tries to tell

‘But the gypsies come every year,
And they do incredible things.’
Jon said.

‘That’s different.’ Mr. Kingsman
Said. ‘It’s in some of them, yes.
But they don’t sell it, they share it.
You are not supposed to sell magic
Ever…. Now you can share a gift
In part for a price, but you aren’t
Selling the gift to people. No, no…
With true talents and skills you have
To train, to hone them…and learn
From a master…as an apprentice. And
That takes YEARS. And even then, the
Master MUST BE careful and diligent
With whom he chooses to teach
And share his skills with…’

Jon nodded, he could see his point
Very well. It did make perfect
Sense…For that’s what he learned
From Raya and her family not so
Long ago.

Then Mr. Kingsman laughed. ‘Not
Unless some great fantastic light
Came down from the sky and put
Itself in your head.’

Jon’s eyes widened and he kept
Perfectly still and mouth tightly

‘So, you see, the thing about magic
Is…Masters know how badly people
Want magic, so that is why they
Made sure that none of the true
Secrets ever got out…or would get
Out to just anyone. There’s a lot
Of responsibility there. A lot of
Responsibility. Because IF everyone
Was out there buying magic…then
Everyone’s wishes would be
Coming true…right?’

‘True.’ Jon agreed.

Then Mr. Kingsman lifted his
Head to stare up far at the sky,
An expression on his face pondering
All sorts of things. ‘Sometimes I
Think the Masters saw far ahead…
Far ahead…Putting bits and pieces
Out there for people to chase…
For the right ones to find, and for
The rest…to waste their time…
Perhaps a test…or a distraction.’

‘A distraction?’ Jon asked as
He listened intensely.

‘Distractions play a key role
In important times. They reveal
A lot.’ Mr. Kingsman said, his
Words almost seemed strategic.

‘I always thought inspiration was
A good thing.’ Jon tried to say
Carefully. ‘I like to draw…I wanted
To paint angels one day…I did
Try once…but very few wanted
Them…Or it was like they wanted
More than what was in the picture.’

Mr. Kingsman stared far off,
His mind measuring his experience
With the words to use…The man
Had seen A LOT. He wasn’t a bad
Man, just shaped by circumstance,
Continuing roles. ‘People do not
Want anything that makes them
Feel bad about themselves, Jon.
Who does?’ He laughed again.
‘You shouldn’t paint angels, Jon.
You should paint garbage. That’s
What people really want.’

‘What?’ Jon nearly spat the word.

‘Oh, I am not saying literal garbage,
Jon.’ Mr. Kingsman sighed. ‘No, I’m
Saying work that doesn’t make you
Think…You shouldn’t waste your
Time on such things. You’re young,
There are plenty of things to do…
Places to go. You should develop
Your skills in other ways. Because
I am telling you…People will
Chase the garbage more than they
Will noble work…Believe me.’

‘Not everyone is like that.’ Jon
Tried to tell him, or hope.

‘I bet it happens.’ Mr. Kingsman
Had to laugh. ‘I bet if you pursue
Quality work, people will chase
The garbage instead…. That’s
How the world works.’ He looked
Down and then started to turn. ‘I
Should go now. I have to check on
Some property.’ Then he looked
Once more at Jon with a keen
Interest. ‘There is something about
You, Jon…I like you…. Think about
My offer, please?’

Jon nodded quietly. Then Mr.
Kingsman smiled and walked to
His horse and rode off…And
Jon just stood there watching him,
Watching the sky…the trees, the
Land…as another flock of doves
Flew overhead…. His mind just
Raced as he stood there in the
Stillness. How could the world be
Growing so big when he had barely
Done anything at all?

For hours Jon worked and did
His chores lost in thoughts,
Thinking of everything Mr. Kingsman
Had said and all that had happened.
He would never be able to put
It all down in words to explain to
Anyone…There was too much
Senses could not convey ever, it
Was just impossible. There was an
Aspect of simple continuity in
How things worked…and simple
Work maintained this, but for a
Few others secrets opened
Limitless ideas and possibilities…
And discoveries, and realities.

But as evening came Jon felt a
Growing queasiness in his gut,
A sick feeling that would grow
And grew until it became a slow
Rolling pain. By the time he climbed
Into bed to sleep the pain in his
Stomach was unavoidable, and all
That he could do was huddle and
Squeeze himself tight like a ball
To cope…Something was very
Wrong. Then he began to succumb
To tremors and a cold sweat…and
Then waves of heat, then back to
Cold again…. This went on all
Through the night, until he finally
Passed out.

When morning came, he felt terribly
Sick, and could barely move. Even
His family noticed and became
Nervous…Such a strange illness to
Come on all of a sudden…out of
Nowhere. He was forced to stay in
Bed, much to the dismay of everyone
As he was needed to do a lot of
The chores…

Weeks went by this way with
Jon suffering from this strange
Illness. No one knew what to do.
And all that Jon could do was
Sleep and try and get as much
Rest as possible to cope…He
Could barely eat, and what he
Could eat he could not keep
Down…He fell into a dark place,
Trapped in bed and dreams and
Visions of things he could not
Understand…of a world made of
Steel and stone, with a lot of
Angry people ranting and yelling
Things that made no sense.

By the time early spring came Jon
Was forced to cope with his condition.
He had farm work that needed to
Be done, there was no choice…so he
Learned to swallow the pain and keep
It silent…Life became miserable.

When the first blooms appeared
Word spread among the villagers
That the gypsies had come again.
So, Jon took a chance and sought
Them out in the meadow that he
Knew in the hopes of finding some
Familiar faces…And fortunately
He did.

The gypsy caravan was set up
Exactly as he remembered it, in
Almost the same spot, just a
Little different…with Raya’s
Family leading it. But when he
Went into their wagon circle to
See her family, he found that Raya
Was also sick…ailments from her
Age and their travels were getting
To her. While her family did their
Work about the camp, he saw Raya
Sitting with her daughter Mira doing
Needlework off to the side and went
To them.

When Raya saw Jon her eyes
Bulged, she could immediately
See that something was terribly
Wrong. He was pale and thin, with
Dark circles under his eyes…She
Waved for him to come close
And stood to give him a hug as
Her family came to surround them
And greet him all the same way.

‘What has happened to you?’
Raya asked almost in tears as
She studied Jon fearfully.

Jon held himself as strong as
He could as he sat with them
Then…He struggled to find the
Words to say as inside he
Wondered to himself how he
Kept going. Something inside of
Him just wouldn’t let him stop…
‘I don’t know, I don’t know.’
He could only tell her. ‘I just
Got so sick…So much happened
Since I saw you last time…’
Then he told her everything, about
His dreams, the strange visitors,
And the angel and the light…And
Then about his latest visitor Mr.

It was so much to take in…Raya
And her family just listened with
Strained faces as their mouths
Hung open. They had never heard
Such tales before. People have
Some stories, but not so many
Altogether like this…Raya thought
Fast as her daughter held her
Mother’s hand nervously. Then
Raya took Jon’s hand to connect
With him…Only one who had
Seen and then sensed it up close
Would understand, no one else
Ever could. And outsider could
Only make fragmented guesses,
And those were usually more
Harmful than good. Then she asked
The family to let her speak to
Jon alone, insisting that only
Her Mira stay close; for unknown
Reasons. She needed to think
And speak very carefully, she
Did not want to frighten Jon
More than he already was. ‘You
Became sick…after this last

‘Yes.’ Jon told her. ‘I even
Coughed up this strange…
Black oil once…it was awful.’
Raya’s eyes shook. ‘Jon, I
Think you were poisoned…
Somehow. They…knew
Something special happened…
They sought it out, tried to
Control it…They destroy what
They cannot control…’

‘What?’ Jon said with horror.
But he had to admit, he had
Suspected something similar.
‘But why? I didn’t do anything.’

‘That doesn’t matter.’ Raya said.
‘All you have to do is be there…
For them to sense it, and attack
You. You don’t have to do
Anything. If you have something
They want, they will do what
Ever means to get it or silence it.’

‘But I never ate or drank
Anything.’ Jon said. ‘None of
My family got sick.’

‘Are you so sure?’ Raya asked.
‘Maybe it was something else…
Or…you are reacting to
Something that you came in
Contact with.’

‘But how? Why?’ Jon asked.
‘Why would I? I haven’t told
Anyone else but you.’

‘You don’t have to.’ Raya
Explained. ‘Opposites attract
Jon…it is in their nature. If
You have something Good…
Then you are going to attract
Something of the opposite,
Something Dark…That’s how
Things work. And often times
They are vicious and they
Destroy anything and everything
To get to what they want. That’s
Why things are so hard. That’s
Why so many struggle…Especially
With dark things…Dark things
Always attack this way. There
Have always been stories about
This…Fairy Tales, legends…’

‘Really?’ Jon wondered aloud.
Then he felt a strange new strength
In knowing this…sometimes the
Best medicine is found in the
Company of a true friend that
Understands. ‘If there is ONE
Thing that I understand now…
Its if the universe wants something
To happen, it happens. Logic
And reason don’t apply. It doesn’t
Care what the dark wants…If it
Wants to make something happen,
It will…I just wonder how many
Are ready for that.’

‘When the time comes,’ Raya
Said softly, ‘I agree, I don’t think
It matters.’ Then she hugged him
Again, kindly assuring him. ‘Why
Don’t you stay with us for a while
Now…We’ll talk some more,
Share some stories…and try to
See this through.’

Valiant: Knock Knock…The Sandman…The Gift…Part 13…

1559 Nuremberg, Germany

He looked into the light and saw
Things beyond reason and words and
Measure. There was no fear nor
Bravery there, just the overwhelming
Need to do. Some celestial instinct
Had been placed within his mind, guided
By time and a mysterious intuition…
Forever changed.

Jon lay in his bed asleep but not asleep,

Put in some undefinable state. It was like
He was another person, or many in one.
It was there within him…and when it
Woke, his eyes flew open before the
Sound came.

Knock knock…

Morning. His family was awake early,
They had no idea of what happened to
Him just days before; he kept it secret.
Then he heard his sister call out…

‘Jon, there’s someone at the door for you.’

His eyes moved fast back and forth as
He sat up in bed and pulled on his pants
And put on his shoes. The air felt different.
He listened and heard his family talking
To someone at the front door very merrily.
That was odd, they were always friendly
To everyone but this wasn’t right. The
Air was heavy, very heavy.

He went out then once he was dressed
To see who it could be. His father and
Mother stood at the front door chatting
Away with someone, just laughing as
Though it was someone they had known
For a long time. When his father saw
His son, he turned and smiled at him.
‘Ah, here he is now. It’s about time he
He showed up.’ He had the biggest
Smile on his face that Jon had ever seen.
He held his breath fast. Just what
Had come over the man?

Jon just made a puzzled expression then
Stepped up to the door with a grin. But
When he looked out the doorway it
Was no familiar face he saw…It was
Some very tall stranger, about 6’5” or
6’6” with silver hair, built wide and
Solid looking…smiling as though he
Were an old friend.

His father patted Jon on the shoulder,
‘This is Mr. Kingsman. He’s come
To see about buying some of your
Pets for his family. Why don’t you
Show him some of the livestock and
Be neighborly.’

Jon nodded and shook the man’s hand.
But he was so taken back by the man’s
Size…He was so tall, he had never
Seen an older man like that so tall.
It almost reminded him of that time
In the city…by the river, those men.
He swallowed awkwardly and tried
To dismiss it. ‘What did you have in
Mind?’ Jon asked. ‘Goats, rabbits…
Some ducks?’

‘I was thinking…doves.’ Mr. Kingsman
Said. ‘I like birds. Birds are a hobby
Of mine. They’re remarkable creatures
Birds. You can train them to do all
Sorts of things.’

‘Doves?’ Jon laughed. Yes, he had
Some. He loved birds. Most people saw
Them as a nuisance. But to him birds
Flew so high and free and saw so much,
They were amazing. ‘Yes, well I have
Some. I can sell some.’

He led the man to the barn where he
Kept the cages for his animals. But with
Every step his insides began to churning,
Burning. He just smiled it away for the
Moment. ‘Are you new here?’

‘Ah well, yes…sort of.’ Mr. Kingsman
Said. ‘I just moved here…For now…
Up the river there.’ He pointed with his
Eyes as they went in the barn and Jon
Showed him the dove cages. ‘I’m just
Here…looking around, managing the
Area.’ He stood next to Jon towering
Over him admiring his doves. ‘These
Are real nice doves that you have here
Jon, real nice. I will take some. I need
Them for training.’

‘For training?’ Jon laughed. ‘Doves?
What for?’

‘Oh, I have some hawks I train.’ Mr.
Kingsman said.

‘Hawks?’ Jon asked nervously.

‘Oh, I won’t hurt them.’ The man said.
‘No, no…see I like to train them, to
Train things. That is what I do.’

‘Oh.’ Jon said as he watched the birds,
Then slowly looked at the man through
The corner of his eye…His words
Struck a chord within him some where
Deep inside…The man was a GIANT.

‘I will take 3 or 4.’ Mr. Kingsman said
As he pulled out a gold coin from his
Pocket. ‘You take good care of them.
They’re real nice, Jon, real nice.’

‘Thank you.’ Jon said as he took a
Small crate and slowly grabbed a
Few doves and put them inside for
The man. He did have a lot of birds,
And Mr. Kingsman swore that he
Wouldn’t hurt them…. But inside his
Mind could not help moving so fast,
No words just a strange feeling.

‘You know, Jon….’ Mr. Kingsman
Started to say slowly. ‘You would
Make a great assistant. I haven’t
Had one in a while, I’m very picky.
I’m very hard to please. But I really
Like you.’

Jon hesitated. He barely met the man
And he was being offered a job? He
Felt like he was being sized up. ‘I
Don’t know. I have a lot to do here,
I don’t see how my family would like

‘Oh, your family likes me Jon.’ Mr.
Kingsman said. ‘I wouldn’t worry
About that. I know what I like.
Everybody loves me, Jon, everybody.’

Jon froze. Those were words that he
Had heard before…by a bridge by
A river…It was as if time stopped.
He looked down and thought for a
Moment then something else too
Over. ‘Oh, no thank you.’ He smiled,
Then grabbed the crate with the doves
And handed it to him. ‘Here you go,
I hope they do well for you.’

Mr. Kingsman smiled and took the
Crate then handed Jon the coin.
‘Think about my offer, Jon. I don’t
Make this offer to just anyone. I
Like you. How about you think
About it?’

Jon grinned politely and nodded.
‘Sure. I will think about it.’ Then
He turned and started walking out
Of the barn for the house…

‘Hey Jon?’ Mr. Kingsman said as
He followed him. ‘You know there’s
Some very powerful men in the
World…They would like you. Think
About what I said, alright?’

Jon just smiled again. ‘Alright.
I have to go now.’

Mr. Kingsman smiled. ‘Yes, I do
Too. Think about it…Be careful
What you say. You know how it
Goes. Just think about it.’

‘I will.’ Jon nodded. ‘’I have to
Go now.’ And he smiled very
As did Mr. Kingsman…then he
Watched as he took the doves and
Rode off on his horse. Jon waited
Until they were out of sight before
Going into the house. His parents
Were very pleased, but he told them
Nothing. They would not understand
Anyway. He did his chores that day
In silence, haunted by the memories
From the past and watching everything
Carefully through the corner of his
Eyes. The world seemed to be getting
Smaller somehow, like something
Was closing in upon him.

He withdrew to himself quietly for
The remainder of the day, avoiding
His family and thinking as little
As possible. But his mind just kept
Whipping flashbacks through his
Eyes…of faces, feelings, and
Conversations. No matter what he
Did he could not fight it. Still he
Tried to forget, but it was impossible.
He was kidding himself at every
Turn…chilling feelings would not
Go away.

Evening came, and with that the
Usual family supper. Everyone
Talked but Jon. No one noticed,
They all liked to do most of the
Talking anyway. Then after the
Meal he retired to his room, again
Quietly with hope…A wayward
Attempt at finding some peace
And maybe some more comforting
Sleep that night.

Once everyone else in the house
Had also retired to their beds and
Found their own rest in sleep…Jon
Just lay in his bed with his eyes
Wide open. He tried forcing his
Mind to remain blank, but it was
Impossible. He felt numb yet aware,
Caught in some state of knowing and
Worrying memories. Hours seemed
To pass this way, so slowly it was
Hard to measure. Only the darkness
Of the night and the star light
Outside told him the time. The
Entire world seemed surreal. And
He just lay there listening to all the
Tiny sounds that he could hear….
An owl outside, the occasional gust
Of wind or cough from someone
Turning in their sleep. There was
Some ominous sense of just

As he tried to squeeze his eyes
Tight to force himself asleep and
Block everything out…he heard
A shuffling sound from the corner
Of his room. Then a man’s voice
Said, ‘Jon?’

His eyes flew open and focused
Straight at the shadowy form
Standing in the corner. He knew
The voice, he had heard it in dreams,
Met it once from a man in the city
Who had mysteriously appeared
Out of nowhere. Jon felt a chill,
Then went numb. He watched as
The man emerged from the shadows
Into the slightly more illuminating
Light from the window by the
Stars. It was him, the tall pale
Stranger with creamy hair and
The mesmerizing eyes. ‘Hello

Jon winced, then looked again.
The man was still there. ‘Hello.’

‘I’ve come to talk to you.’ The
Man said strangely, very calmly.
To describe him was nearly
Impossible…Tall, intimidating,
Charming…a good looking man,
With a powerful presence. He
Dare not ask how he got into his
Room, the man was filled with
Mystery. ‘I need to show you
Something now.’

Jon could only say. ‘Alright.’
Was there a point in arguing? Maybe
He was dreaming.

‘Now, I need you to come with
Me and do as I tell you…exactly,
Please.’ The man said.

‘Why?’ Jon asked as he sat up.

‘This has to happen right now.,
Right now.’ The man said in a
Tone that was gripping at once.
‘Please get dressed and come with

Jon’s eyes widened. Then he put
On his pants and shoes and did
As the man said. He had to admit
He was curious. He simply did as
He was told. Then went to him.

The man smiled at him. ‘Good.
Now I want to show you something.
I need you to do something for
Me. It is very important. Don’t
Ask questions, just do as I tell
You. It’s not bad, I just need you
To do this for me…RIGHT NOW.’

‘Alright.’ Jon said with a strange
Expression as he stood next to him
Trying not to study his face to
Much. It was hard, the man towered
Over him…and held the impression
Of chiseled like something from
Another world or time. ‘What do
You want me to do?’

‘Just watch, listen…and do exactly
As I tell you, alright?’ The man said
Carefully with a gently smile. Then
He took something from his pocket,
Some sort of thin black rectangular
Object with glowing lights on it.
He touched it a few times, there was
A bright flash of white-golden light…
It engulfed them both…Then all of
A sudden they were standing…
Someplace else…

There were trees lining a long
Road that looked as though it was
Made of some uniform flat rocks
With straight lines in yellow painted
On it…lined with tall poles that
Held these dark ropes…And at
The top of some of the poles were these
Bright lights that looked like they were made
Of metal. Jon was in awe. It was
Freezing but he didn’t mind, it was
All just so shocking to see. Jon
Just looked all around taking it all
In…Then the man nodded and
Guided Jon’s eyes to a pebbled road
That led into a dark tree line.
‘Come this way.’ Then they walked
Down the pebbled road up to what
Looked like some kind of house, but
None he had ever seen before.
It really was too dark to see details.

The man brought Jon to the front
Of the house where they stood for a
Moment quietly. He allowed Jon a
Minute to take everything in. ‘It’s
A house.’ The man said calmly as
Though it were nothing. ‘The year
Is 2012…’

Jon’s eyes opened wide again. ‘What?’

‘There’s no time to explain,’ The man
Said. ‘Now, I’m going to tell you something,
And I want you to do exactly as
I tell you. Nothing more, nothing
Less. Do you understand? We only
Have a little while. Now you must
Do this…right now.’

The shock was overwhelming. Jon
Told himself it had to be a dream,
It had to be. So, he just went
With it. ‘Alright.’

Then the man quickly and
Specifically explained to Jon what
He wanted him to do and say…
And NOT under any circumstances
Change or add a single word. Jon
Was so shocked he could barely
Think at all, making it impossible
For him not to follow these directions,
He simply couldn’t think a word beyond

The man went up to the front door
Of the house and went inside…
Everyone was asleep, that
Much was clear. Then a few
Moments later he reappeared and
Waved for Jon to follow him into
The house.

Inside was an even stranger sight,
The house was cluttered with all
Sorts of things beyond description.
Furniture, odds and ends that made
No sense…Only the paintings on
The walls caught his eyes, even in
The dark, he found them amazing
And intriguing. But there was so little
Time to take it all in, the man
Would not allow it. Jon looked
Around then saw the man standing
In a large more open room with lots
Of furniture and things…all dimly
Lit…with odd looking lights coming
From surfaces that seemed impossible.
And there, standing with the man in
The middle of it all, was another man
Seemingly half-awake, yawning
Looking like he was half asleep. He
Had loose, long dirty blond hair and
A medium build, and had a
Very similar height to the sharp
Dressed man that brought him. In
Fact, somehow in the dark, they
Seemed very similar.

‘Jon.’ The man carefully said, ‘say
Hello to Jeff. Talk to him…And
Tell him EXACTLY what I said. I
Will be waiting just outside for you…
Come to me when you are done.’
Then he left Jon alone with the

‘Hello,’ Jon said to this new person
He could barely see in the dark.

‘Hi,’ Jeff said to him half yawning,
He really appeared as though he thought
He was asleep.

‘He said I have to tell you something.’
Jon said as he studied the stranger.
He looked so familiar…somehow.

‘Okay. What is it?’ Jeff said as
He fought to be more awake. Then as
He studied Jon, his eyes began to
Bulge wider and wider.

‘You’re going to write stories for the
Internet.’ Jon said to him. ‘This
Is going to happen, it’s already
Happened. You’re going to do this for
7 years, write about your dreams…
You will be criticized, say nothing.
Then write this part right here.
(this part). You will do this. You
Already did it. Do you understand?’

‘What are you talking about?’
Jeff laughed. ‘What is this?’

‘You have to.’ Jon said carefully
Eyeing him, more intrigued each moment.

‘What? Why?’ Jeff laughed. ‘This is
A joke, right? Oh, sure it is.
Nothing’s going to happen.’

‘No, you will.’ Jon told him.
‘He said you did.’

‘What is this?’ Jeff just laughed.

Jon couldn’t think, he just could
Not help walking around and
Looking at everything. ‘He said
I have to tell you this right now.’

Jeff scowled and shook his head
Fighting to understand, but could not
Help studying Jon. ‘Who are you?
What is this?’

‘You know.’ Jon answered cautiously
Following his instructions.

‘This is NUTS. I’m not doing anything.’
Jeff laughed. ‘I’m done.’

‘You’re going to do this.’ Jon
Said, looking closely at the furniture.
Even in the dark, he could see how
Sharp everything was made.

‘You’re nuts. Do you have any idea
What the world is like right now?
HA! Forget it.’ Jeff said as he
Started to turn away. ‘I’m going back
To sleep.’

‘You can’t stop what has to happen.’
Jon told him.

‘What?’ Jon snapped. ‘You can’t make
Me do anything. I told you…I’m done.’

‘You will.’ Jon insisted.

‘This is nuts. I told you, I’m done.’ Jeff
Said angrily.

‘It will happen. It already did.’ Jon said.

‘Oh yeah?’ Jeff laughed. ‘Try and
Make me. There’s nothing you
Can do or say to make me, I
Told you…I’m done.’

‘You will.’

‘Bullshit.’ Jeff laughed. ‘After
Everything…’ He paused. ‘Never mind,
Forget…There is nothing you can say,
Nothing to make me.’

Jon turned and looked at him slowly.
‘There is…’

‘Oh yeah, WHAT?’ Jeff laughed. ‘Then
Tell me something about me that
No one knows, genius. Not some
Story, garbage about a dream about me.
Tell me something – ‘

Jon walked up to him and
Leaned in closely and whispered in
His ear. The words immediately made
Jeff freeze still.

There was a frightening moment
So tense the silence was painful.
Jeff took a step back
As Jon moved away just watching
The shock on his face. ‘I’ll do
Anything that you want.’ Jeff
Said then with a shaky voice.

Then Jon gave him specific brief
Instructions and said, ‘Now I have
To leave.’ Without hesitating
He left through the front door
Without looking back.

Jeff stood shaking a moment then
Followed Jon to the door and
Looked out to see the familiar
Stranger standing outside…just
Far enough away to escape details.
‘Who are you?’ He called out to
The tall stranger. ‘What is going on?’

And the tall stranger simply
Smiled in the dark and said.
‘Why you know me. We’ve talked
Before, and we will again.’

‘What kind of answer is that?’
Jeff half laughed.

‘You told him exactly what I said,
Nothing more?’ The stranger asked

‘Yes, exactly. Nothing more.’ Jon

‘Then you know all that you need
To right now.’ The stranger told
Jeff. ‘Now, watch and wait. And
Follow the instructions carefully.

‘But how will I know what to – ‘
Jeff started to say…

‘It’s happened already. You will
See.’ The tall stranger said, as
He guided Jon away.

‘What kind of answer is that?’
Jeff laughed, thinking of the
Strange things he was told not to
Repeat. Many would guess, but none
Would ever get it right anyway. He
Just stood there a while before going
Back to bed dismissing it as a dream.

The tall stranger then returned Jon
To his own room to return to sleep…
Where he too would try to dismiss it
As a dream…That’s simply how it was.
